New York City Mayor Eric Adams, a Democrat, has remarked that there has been a ” robbery pattern” linked to crimes committed by incoming migrants.
Migrants Arrival from Southern Border
Adams’ remarks come as New York City continues to face an unprecedented influx of migrants arriving from the southern border.
Migrant Involvement in City Crimes
In a press briefing earlier this month, Adams stated, “Do I believe that there are some migrants who are committing crimes in the city? Yes. Yes.”
Rising Crime Rates
Recent data from the New York Police Department shows an 11.3% surge in vehicle grand larcenies, a 6.9% uptick in felony assaults, and a 3.5% increase in robberies in October 2023,
Crime Across All Backgrounds
Adams was careful to note, however, that the issue of crime transcends just the migrant community, as New Yorkers from all backgrounds contribute to the city’s criminal statistics.
Rise Not Solely Due to Migrants
Adams clarified, “I do not want anyone to walk away thinking that the [grand larceny auto] increase we saw in the city was just migrants. No, it’s not.”
Rise in Illegal Immigrants
This came amidst a backdrop of over 164,000 illegal immigrants seeking aid in New York since the spring of 2022.
Prepping for More Arrivals
With an expected surge of immigrants in the coming months, Adams is bracing for even more arrivals. This situation is echoed by other Democratic mayors like Chicago and Denver, who are appealing to the federal government for assistance as their cities near capacity.
Adams Criticizes Texas Governor
Adams has also criticized Texas Governor Greg Abbott for transporting migrants to New York via buses, exacerbating the city’s challenges in providing them with essentials.
“Cruel and Inhumane Politics”
“New York City has begun to see another surge of migrants arriving, and we expect this to intensify over the coming days as a result of Texas Gov. Abbott’s cruel and inhumane politics,” Mayor Adams remarked in December.
New Rule for Immigrant Bus Arrival
Adams recently implemented a new ordinance in response to the Texas actions. This rule mandates that buses transporting immigrants can only arrive between specific hours on weekdays and requires advance notice.
Companies Bypass Regulations
To get around these regulations, bus companies have opted to deliver immigrants to suburbs or even different states, such as New Jersey, requiring them to use public transit systems to access the cities.
Lawsuit Against Bus Companies
Following these bus companies’ actions, the New York Mayor has filed a lawsuit of over $700 million against 17 bus companies for their alleged role in transporting thousands of migrants from Texas.
Hochul Backs Lawsuit
New York Governor Kathy Hochul supported the lawsuit and stated, “It’s about time that the companies facilitating his [Abbott’s] actions take responsibility for their role in this ongoing crisis.”
Creating Chaos
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Denver Mayor Mike Johnston have also accused Abbott of creating chaos by sending immigrants to their cities without a coordinated plan.
Bus Drop-Off Restrictions
Adopting a firm stance, the Democratic mayors have imposed restrictions on bus drop-off zones for travel companies transporting immigrants to their cities.
Fines and Legal Actions
They have limited the timeframes for drop-offs and issued warnings of fines or potential legal consequences for companies dropping off homeless immigrants.
Governor Urges Halt to Migrant Transport
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker also urged Governor Abbott to halt the transportation of migrants to Chicago, citing concerns about the impending winter storms.
“I Plead with You for Mercy”
“While action is pending at the federal level, I plead with you for mercy for the thousands of people who are powerless to speak for themselves,” Pritzker wrote in a Friday letter.
Winter Threat to Migrant Lives
The governor added, “‘Please, while winter is threatening vulnerable people’s lives, suspend your transports and do not send more people to our state.”
