Nikki Haley Accuses Congress of ‘Lying to the American People’ Amid Failure to Pass Key U.S.-Mexico Legislation

Ex-Governor of South Carolina, Nikki Haley, criticized Congress on Sunday for ‘lying to the American people,’ highlighting their failure to approve critical legislation that addresses the U.S.-Mexico border and provides aid to Israel, Ukraine, and other allies.

Bipartisan Efforts Hit a Roadblock

A bipartisan group of senators had been working for months on a deal that would link border issues with foreign aid. Yet, this effort hit a roadblock when a large segment of Republicans, along with the Senate’s separate foreign aid bill, were rejected.

Speaking on ABC’s ‘This Week,’ Nikki Haley emphasized that “Congress needs to do their job and make sure that they go and do everything they can for national security.”

She further critiqued Congress, stating, “Congress is failing because they are making this sound like you have to choose between Ukraine and Israel or securing the border. They are lying to the American people. That’s a false premise. We can do both.”

Uncertain Future

Republican members of Congress have generally been in favor of merging immigration policy with foreign aid. Currently, it’s uncertain if any progress will be made on this front this week, as members of both the House and Senate are returning to their districts for a recess.

The Senate’s early Tuesday approval of a $95 billion foreign aid bill concluded a prolonged struggle, underscoring significant foreign policy divisions within the Republican Party.

The bill, passing with a 70-29 vote, now moves to the House, where it faces opposition from House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has stated that the House will not consider it due to the lack of border security provisions.

The legislation allocates $60 billion for Ukraine’s conflict with Russia since February 2022, $14 billion in military aid to Israel, $9 billion for humanitarian aid in Gaza and other regions, and about $5 billion to support Taiwan.

Supporters of the bill, including most Democrats and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, view it as crucial to counter Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to European democracy.

They argue that bolstering Ukraine now could prevent the future deployment of American troops, especially if Russia’s aggression escalates against a NATO ally.

Democratic Principles

Following the Senate’s passage of the foreign aid bill, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer asserted on the Senate floor, “If we want the world to remain a safe place for freedom, for democratic principles, and for our future prosperity, then America must lead the way.  “And with this bill, the Senate declares that American leadership will not waver.”

‘The most important vote’

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, a Republican, described the vote as ‘the most important vote we will ever take as United States senators.’

Romney was among the 18 Republican senators who stood against a filibuster from their colleagues in the days leading up to the final vote.

Biden’s Urgent Call

Speaking through a spokesperson, President Joe Biden called on the House to quickly pass the foreign aid bill.

Highlighting the urgency, White House press secretary Jean-Pierre remarked, “The costs of inaction are rising every day. American leadership matters, and the world is watching − watching what the House Republicans do.”

On Sunday, Nikki Haley urged President Joe Biden to intensify his efforts in communicating the significance of foreign aid to Americans nationwide.

She stated, “Joe Biden needs to be speaking more to the American people about what this package means and why it affects the American people and why it protects them from further war.”

The House did approve a tough border bill, H. R. 2, last year, but it stands little chance of success in the Democrat-led Senate.
