Musk warns migrants are “coming for your homes” after NYC students forced out of classroom

Elon Musk's X has shed more than 1,000 staff globally from teams responsible for stopping abusive content online, according to new figures released on January 11, 2024 by Australia's online watchdog. Australia's eSafety Commission said these "deep cuts" and the reinstatement of thousands of banned accounts had created a "perfect storm" for the spread of harmful content. In the wake of New York City students shifting to remote learning due to their school accommodating migrants, Elon Musk issued a stark warning.

Musk remarked on X, “This is what happens when you run out of hotel rooms. Soon, cities will run out of schools to vacate. Then they will come for your homes.”

Musk responded to a video posted by LibsofTikTok, which depicted migrants alighting from a yellow school bus at James Madison High School in Brooklyn.

The account captioned the video, “School is closed tomorrow because illegals will be sleeping in the school’s gym. This is disgraceful! NYC is prioritizing illegals over Americans,”

Musk further emphasized his message, writing, “They’ve run out of hotel rooms, are kicking kids out of school for illegal housing and now they want your homes too.”

LibsofTikTok responded to Musk, affirming that his prediction about migrants being housed in American homes was already a reality. This was supported by referencing an August Boston 25 News article, “Governor Healey asks residents to house migrant families amid growing shelter crisis.”

The article detailed how Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, in response to the declared state of emergency, urged residents to host migrant families as the state’s shelters were at full capacity.

Over the summer, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, declared a state of emergency due to a surge in migrant arrivals. She called for increased support from both the federal government and state residents, citing a critical shortage of shelters at the time.

Musk, known for his recent involvement in the US immigration discussion following a visit to the US-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas, where he encountered “some pretty extreme individuals coming through,” simply responded, “Wow.”

Storm Alert

Adding context, New York City Council Minority Whip Inna Vernikov earlier stated that, due to a looming storm, around 2,000 migrants would be moved to the gymnasiums and auditorium of James Madison High School.

Schools or Shelters?

Vernikov stated, “Our public schools are meant to be places of learning and growth for our children and were never intended to be shelters or facilities for emergency housing. There are approximately 4,000 students who attend Madison High School.”

“Their parents are rightfully concerned. Our constituents who live in the vicinity are concerned for their safety and well-being. This will agitate local residents, disrupt the entire school environment, and place a tremendous burden on families, students, school administrators, and staff.”

Musk Warns of a “Collapse”

Musk commented on the significant influx of people into the country, stating that it’s “leading to a collapse of social services where even America’s largest city, New York, is buckling under the pressure of just how many illegal immigrants are going to New York.”

“Unacceptable”

Vernikov insisted on a “full stop” of using public schools as shelters for migrants, deeming the use of Floyd Bennett Field as “both unacceptable and was entirely foreseeable” due to its exposure to adverse weather.

Migrants Bypass Scanning Protocols

She highlighted security concerns at Madison High School, a school with scanning protocols for students, noting that migrants bypassed these measures under NYPD guidance. Vernikov pointed out the significant deployment of law enforcement and other resources to manage the situation.

Early Morning Relocation

She also expressed concern for the displaced children, who faced further relocation early in the morning. Accompanying her statement on X, she shared a video of migrants, including children, entering the high school, labeling the entire scenario as an “unacceptable situation for all!”

Migrants Relocated, School Closed

Although the migrants were reportedly moved out of the school before sunrise, Madison High School informed parents that the school would remain closed, offering remote learning for all students on Wednesday. This decision was made “to ensure a smooth transition for families temporarily sheltering overnight in the building.”

“It’s about time we wake up”

New York Assemblyman Mike Reilly criticized the use of James Madison High School as a migrant shelter, noting its impact on students’ learning and preparation for important exams.

He emphasized his bipartisan bill to stop schools from being used as shelters, urging, “It’s about time we wake up.”
