A significant portion of Democratic voters, according to a recent Pew Research Center poll, hold a negative opinion about the Biden administration’s management of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexican border.
Losing Democratic Support?
The poll indicates that 49 percent of Democratic or Democratic-leaning voters rate the government’s performance as “somewhat bad” in “dealing with the large number of migrants seeking to enter the U.S. at the border with Mexico,” with an additional 23 percent labeling it as “very bad.”
This survey, conducted by Pew Research Center, involved 5,140 U.S. adults and took place from January 16 to 21.
73% Democrats Unhappy
After adjusting for rounding and excluding undecided voters, this translates to 73 percent expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the border crisis.
Low Approval Rates
In contrast, only 23 percent of Democratic-leaning voters believe the administration is doing a “somewhat good” job in this area, with only three percent deeming it “very good.”
A Polarized Issue
The issue of illegal immigration across the southern border has become increasingly polarized. In January, border protection officers made 124,220 arrests, a significant decrease from the record high of 249,735 in December.
Illegal Immigration in 2024
In the political arena, Donald Trump, who is widely considered the front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has consistently focused on illegal immigration as a central issue.
6.3 Million Migrant Encounters
The U.S. southern border has seen a staggering 6.3 million migrant encounters since President Biden took office in January 2021, according to the Office of Homeland Security Statistics.
Seeking Asylum in the U.S.
This situation has resulted in over 2.4 million migrants being permitted entry into the United States. The majority of these individuals are currently undergoing removal proceedings in immigration court, where they have the opportunity to seek asylum as a defense against deportation.
Democrats Rethink Border Policy
Interestingly, an increasing number of Democrats are now calling for stricter border control measures. This shift adds a complex layer to the immigration debate, particularly in a presidential election year where immigration is expected to be a pivotal issue dividing the two major political parties.
Biden’s Executive Measures
Under the Biden administration, a total of 535 executive actions related to immigration were taken up to January 17, a period marked by significant migration challenges both in the Western Hemisphere and globally, according to the Migration Policy Institute (MPI).
Cleaning Trump’s Mess?
The administration has sought to enhance collaboration with Latin American countries to create migration opportunities closer to people’s home countries.
While not all, some of these actions also aim to reverse policies implemented during the Trump administration.
Bipartisan Immigration Bill
In a recent push, President Joe Biden asked Congress to pass a bipartisan bill focused on border security and asylum laws, blaming Donald Trump for hindering its progress in the Senate.
Fair and Tough?
Biden praised the bill as “the most fair, humane reforms in our immigration system in a long time and the toughest set of reforms to secure the border ever.”
‘Dead’ Bill
Despite earlier support from Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell and Senator James Lankford, the bill is now considered ‘dead.’
Losing Ground?
A Pew Research Center poll in 2023 indicated that 62 percent of Democrat voters viewed the administration’s approach negatively, compared to 35 percent who were positive.
From 2021 to 2024
This sentiment has evolved from 2021, when 56 percent of Democrats disapproved of President Joe Biden’s management of the southern border, while 42 percent supported it.
Escalating Disapproval
The 2024 Pew Research Center poll indicates the highest level of Democratic dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the southern border since 2019, under the Trump administration.
Democrats’ Concerns
Back then, 84 percent viewed the administration’s efforts negatively, including 58 percent who rated it as “very bad,” while only 15 percent approved.
89% Disapprove Border Management
In the 2024 poll, 89 percent of Republican or Republican-leaning voters also disapprove of the Biden administration’s border management, with just 11 percent in favor.
80% Americans Unhappy
Overall, 80 percent of Americans are unhappy with the current border situation, a significant decline from 73 percent disapproval in 2023 and 68 percent in 2021.
