This week marked a significant achievement for Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene in her impeachment efforts against senior Biden officials, as the House GOP scheduled the commencement of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas’s impeachment.
House Floor Vote
On Wednesday, the House Homeland Security Committee declared their intention to start reviewing four impeachment articles against Mayorkas on January 30, a move that validates Greene’s early initiative in introducing charges against him last May.
A vote on the House floor is anticipated, possibly by early February.
A Turning Point?
“In November, I forced the first vote in the House to impeach Mayorkas which sent my articles to the Homeland Security Committee,” Greene posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Since then, our committee has worked hard to present the facts and evidence. And now, on 1/30, my colleagues and I will finally hold Mayorkas accountable for his crimes on our southern border.”
Strong Opposition
The GOP’s effort to remove Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has met with stark disapproval from the Department of Homeland Security. A recent DHS memo strongly criticized Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene for leading an investigation that seems to have a “pre-determined and ‘guaranteed’ result,” condemning these actions as “harmful to the Department and its workforce.”
Year-Long Impeachment Push
House Republicans have been endeavoring for more than a year to impeach Mayorkas, citing his alleged failure to effectively safeguard the U.S.-Mexico border, a violation of his oath to office. A successful impeachment would mark the first for a Cabinet member since the 1870s.
Record-Breaking Migrant Encounters
The southern border of the United States saw a record-breaking number of illegal migrant encounters in the last month of 2023, shattering all previous records. Fox News Digital received information from Customs and Border Patrol sources indicating that there were a staggering 300,000 migrant encounters in December alone.
Historic Levels
Throughout December, over 302,000 migrants were detected attempting to cross the U.S. border, the highest count for any single month in history. Additionally, since the beginning of the fiscal year on October 1st, the border has seen over 785,000 migrant encounters, the highest for any first quarter ever recorded.
Biden’s Border Woes
The border issue has increasingly troubled the Biden administration, with GOP lawmakers threatening impeachment against the Homeland Security chief, and Republican governors increasing pressure on the administration by relocating migrants to Democrat-led cities, now facing resource burdens due to the surge.
Impeachment Hearings
This month, the House Homeland Security Committee conducted two hearings focused on the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, delving into the alleged impacts of the border crisis.
Biden: The Root Cause?
Committee Chairman, Representative Mark Greene, has consistently pointed fingers at the Biden administration’s immigration policies for the migrant surge, expressing outrage over what he describes as “preventable” and “infuriating” tragedies caused by the influx.
GOP Leaders Cheer
Fellow House Republicans, including Representatives Michael McCaul from Texas, Ralph Norman from South Carolina, and Randy Feenstra from Iowa, praised Wednesday’s announcement. Norman expressed his enthusiasm on X, proclaiming, “HUGE! Step one in securing our border. Accountability for the man who intentionally caused this crisis.”
Impeachment as a Solution
McCaul also weighed in, stating, “If this administration won’t take action to protect America and secure our border, @HomelandGOP will. It starts with impeaching the one man who has failed to enforce necessary laws and created this unprecedented crisis: Secretary Mayorkas.”
Baseless Attack or Valid Concern?
Meanwhile, Democrats and the White House have rallied behind Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, dismissing the GOP’s allegations as a mere “baseless political attack.” Notably, there are also Republicans who have expressed skepticism about the impeachment campaign, arguing that the evidence required to prove a high crime or misdemeanor hasn’t been sufficiently met.
Questioning the Validity of Hearings
Ian Sams, the White House spokesperson for oversight and investigations, criticized GOP legislators for not including Mayorkas’ testimony in last week’s hearing on X. Mayorkas, who was invited two weeks prior, could not attend due to a prior engagement.
Undermining Constitutional Norms?
Sams commented, “House Republicans are refusing to allow Mayorkas to testify. They held two quick ‘impeachment hearings’ that were just theater to push rightwing messaging, not a valid impeachment process.”
“They won’t acknowledge constitutional scholars who say this effort is unconstitutional.”
