Trump won with over 50% of the vote in the Iowa caucus, far ahead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. Yet, several networks chose to either speak over or cut off his speech entirely.

Inside the Decision

MSNBC host Rachel Maddow interrupted as Trump began, explaining that the channel ‘will keep an eye’ on his remarks and clarified that the decision wasn’t made ‘out of spite.’ ‘

“At this point in the evening, the projected winner of the Iowa caucuses has just started giving his victory speech,” Maddow informed viewers. “We will keep an eye on that as it happens. We will let you know if there is any news made in that speech—if there is anything noteworthy, something substantive and important.”

Why They Filter Trump’s Speeches

She further explained, The reason I’m saying this is, of course, there is a reason that we and other news organizations have generally stopped giving an unfiltered, live platform to remarks by former President Trump. It is not out of spite, it is not a decision that we relish, it is a decision that we regularly revisit. And, honestly, earnestly, it is not an easy decision.”

35-Second Interruption of Trump

MSNBC’s recent move echoes their actions following the 2020 presidential election. Trump prematurely declared victory two days after the election on November 3. CNN and Fox News broadcast the speech, but MSNBC’s Brian Williams interrupted it just 35 seconds in.

Does It amount to Censorship?

While CNN did broadcast Trump’s Iowa speech, they interrupted it with analysis from host Jake Tapper. However, this raises questions about the ethics of news networks cutting off a former president’s broadcast, suggesting it could be seen as censorship.

Additionally, in December, Fox News discontinued a Trump speech in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, with host Arthel Neville countering Trump’s election claims, saying, “As you heard, many untruths. The 2020 election was not rigged. It was not stolen.”

Media “embraced propaganda over journalism”

Michael Shellenberger, the CBR Chair in Politics, Censorship, and Free Speech at the University of Austin, criticized MSNBC and CNN, accusing them of prioritizing propaganda over journalism in their coverage of Trump.

Viewer Backlash

Some viewers expressed their discontent, with one person commenting, “It’s appalling how MSNBC and CNN cut off Trump’s victory speech last night coz he was addressing illegal immigration that’s [a] shame.”

Another suggested, “They are afraid to let Americans decide for themselves.”

Victory Speech Interrupted

Upon closer examination of the footage, Newsweek pointed out that CNN aired Trump’s victory speech for more than 10 minutes before Tapper’s analysis was presented. The network also broadcasted over 10 minutes of Nikki Haley’s speech and the brief speech by Ron DeSantis, which lasted over three minutes in their entirety.

Before Tapper’s interruption, Trump made reference to an ‘invasion of millions and millions of people,’ addressing the ongoing issue of illegal migration at the southern border with Mexico.

In November 2023, the U.S. Border Patrol reported 191,113 encounters ‘between ports of entry along the southwest border.’ These ‘encounters’ include both apprehensions resulting in migrants being detained in the U.S. and incidents involving migrant expulsions.

The statistics indicate there were over 2.475 million such encounters in fiscal year 2023, an increase from 2.378 million the previous year.

Trump’s 2020 Election Claims

Trump has consistently faced backlash for his persistent assertions that he was the real winner in the 2020 presidential election, though no evidence has backed these claims. Notably, a voter data expert, Ken Block, hired by the Trump campaign, recently revealed that the 2020 election was not stolen, citing a lack of sufficient evidence.

Voters’ Perception of Election Legitimacy

CNN’s coverage also included a poll of caucus voters, revealing that approximately two-thirds of them expressed the belief that Biden did not legitimately win the 2020 election.

Trump’s Impact on the Republican Party

In his summary of the speech, Jake Tapper commented, “It’s a false belief. But it shows the degree to which Trump has remade and refashioned the Republican Party in his image, not only with new Republican voters but also by convincing Republicans of his ideology even when empirically false.”
