“Lying about the evidence in all caps”: Liz Cheney Slams Trump

Liz Cheney didn’t mince words as she criticized Trump for  “Lying about the evidence in all caps” in an early January social media post, supporting her stance with publicly accessible evidence and referring to the former president as “starting 2024 hangry.”

Liz Cheney, the ex-Representative from Wyoming and co-chair of the House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack, hit hard with her criticism of former President Donald Trump as she debunked his false narratives about the Capitol riot in 2021.

January 2024 was the third anniversary of the January 6 insurrection, where a group of Trump supporters caused an event leading to five fatalities and numerous injuries among US Capitol and DC Metropolitan police officers.

Before this anniversary, Trump alleged on his Truth Social platform that Cheney and House Democrats supposedly destroyed records linked to the attack. He also restated a refuted claim about ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California declining a proposal for 10,000 National Guard troops to secure the Capitol during the attack.

In a Truth Social post, the former president questioned: ”Why did American Disaster Liz Cheney, who suffers from TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome), and was defeated for Congress by the largest margin for a sitting Congressman or Congresswoman in the history of our Country, ILLEGALLY DELETE & DESTROY most of the evidence, and related items, from the January 6th Committee of Political Thugs and Misfits.”

The 45th President further exclaimed in his known all-caps, shouty style: “THIS ACT OF EXTREME SABOTAGE MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR MY LAWYERS TO PROPERLY PREPARE FOR, AND PRESENT, A PROPER DEFENSE OF THEIR CLIENT, ME.”

The following day, Liz Cheney, in a post on her X account (formerly Twitter), remarked that Trump seemed to be “starting 2024 hangry.” Addressing Trump’s claims, Cheney stated, “You and your lawyers have had the J6 cmttee materials (linked below) plus the grand jury info & much more for months. Lying about the evidence in all caps won’t change the facts. A public trial will show it all.”

Responding on the morning of 2 January, Ms. Cheney, arguably one of the most outspoken critics of Mr. Trump in the Republican Party, pointed out that the committee’s extensive 800+-page final report and all its supporting materials are accessible online for anyone interested.

Trump’s assertion regarding Pelosi rejecting 10,000 National Guard troops has been debunked. As per The Washington Post, the former president made an “offhand remark” to Acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller during a meeting discussing the January 6 rally, suggesting that the US Capitol might require 10,000 troops, in an attempt to emphasize the expected turnout of his supporters (which was actually between 10,000 and 80,000).

However, Miller didn’t interpret Trump’s comment as a direct order but rather as a casual remark, resulting in no troops being deployed.

The ex-president claims these actions were taken to hinder his preparation for the impending federal trial on election interference charges, led by Special Counsel Jack Smith.

The Countdown

This trial is set to commence on March 4, 2024, in Washington DC. Mr. Trump maintains that his actions are protected by presidential immunity, though an appeals court has ruled this argument invalid. Trump subsequently asked the Supreme Court to put this ruling on hold.

Trump Is Ready

Judging by an article from MSNBC’s Steve Benen, it looks like Trump is getting ready for his upcoming trials with all the necessary information. Did he have these materials for months? According to Benen, “Yes and yes.”

Will the “Lie” Gain Believers?

In his additional analysis of the situation, Benen stated that he doesn’t doubt that the former president and his allies “will continue to push the “lie,” and it’s not clear yet if a significant portion of the GOP base will buy into this “nonsense.”

However, he emphasized that repeating it won’t transform “fiction” into fact.
