Lindsey Graham Booed During Trump’s South Carolina Victory Speech

Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a Republican and long-time supporter of former President Trump, faced boos during Trump’s victory speech in the South Carolina Republican Primary.

A Chilly Welcome

Senator Lindsey Graham faced a chilly welcome as he appeared alongside Donald Trump during the latter’s victory speech in South Carolina on Saturday night. Trump, having secured a win in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary over Nikki Haley, invited Senator Graham to the stage.

Despite Trump’s shoutout and his declaration of Graham as “a little bit further left than some of the people on this stage,” the exuberant crowd wasn’t too fond of Graham.

Trump’s lighthearted comment about turning to Graham for help with left-leaning issues was met with a surge of loud boos from the audience.

Trump’s ‘Good Man’ Amid Boos

As Trump encouraged Graham to come forward, joking about his hesitation to be associated with him, the crowd’s jeers grew louder. Nonetheless, Trump maintained his support, affirming, “I love him. He’s a good man. Come up here Lindsey”

Graham Shifts Mood

Senator Graham addressed the crowd with reassurance, stating, “The nightmare you’re facing is just about over. Help is on the way. This is the most qualified man to be President of the United States.”

His words gradually shifted the audience’s mood to cheering.

Trump Sweeps Early GOP Primaries

Immediately following, Donald Trump appeared on stage, fresh from his commanding win in South Carolina’s Saturday night primary. This victory marked his clean sweep of the first four early Republican presidential primary contests. 

“This was a little sooner than we anticipated,” Trump quipped to his elated supporters.

The race was decisively called for Trump just a minute after the polls closed at 7:00 p.m., marking a significant setback for Nikki Haley.

Continuing his winning streak, Trump’s recent victory in South Carolina further amplifies his already strong momentum from wins in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.

Haley’s Home State Loss

The Saturday setback for Nikki Haley is a significant event, marking the first instance in over half a century where a Republican contender has lost their home state primary. The last such occurrence was when Richard Nixon lost California’s primary to Ronald Reagan, who was also a Californian. 

Graham’s Advice to Haley

Ahead of the poll closures on Saturday, Senator Graham, speaking to the press, remarked, “Republicans have made up their mind.” 

While expressing respect and admiration for Haley, he opined that it would be better for her to withdraw from the race sooner rather than later.

Not Backing Down Yet

Despite facing challenges in the primaries and lagging behind Trump in both national and state polls by considerable margins, Nikki Haley, in a ‘state of the race’ address on Tuesday, made it clear that she is “far from” withdrawing her candidacy.

The former South Carolina governor remains committed to continuing her campaign in the 2024 Republican primary at least until Super Tuesday on March 5. 

This pivotal day will see 15 states vying for an impressive total of 874 delegates, a significant opportunity for any candidate.

Addressing supporters and media at her Charleston headquarters, Haley affirmed, “No matter what happens in South Carolina, I would continue to run.”

Former President Trump expressed his gratitude towards Michael Whatley, the North Carolina Republican Party chair, endorsing him as the next Republican National Committee chair alongside his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, as co-chair. 

Surprised by Audience’s Booing

During his speech, audience members booed upon the mention of South Carolina Republican Party chair Drew McKissick, reflecting the state’s internal party conflicts. Trump, caught off-guard by the reaction, remarked to Fox News, “We have a highly opinionated group of people [here].”
