Allison Greenfield, the principal clerk for the judge overseeing Trump’s Manhattan fraud trial, faced harassment and threats after the former president leveled various attacks against her. She now appears set to become an elected judge.
Change of fortune
“The trial clerk in Trump’s civil fraud trial,” Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine wrote on Threads, “has been viciously targeted by the MAGA crowd with vile rhetoric and death threats. Plot twist: Now she has taken a major step towards becoming a civil court judge herself.”
Prophecy fulfilled
After Trump and his attorneys attacked Greenfield, Judge Arthur Engoron issued a gag order against them. While challenging the order, Trump’s legal team argued that Greenfield was fair game for criticism as she had “voluntarily undertaken to co-judge one of the highest-profile cases in American history.”
Complaining
“I do not like having eyes rolled,” Alina Habba, Trump’s lawyer, complained, referring to “the treatment” she had “received from Ms. Greenfield.” “I do not like being yelled at by law clerks who did not earn the robe,” Habba whined, “and I think this is completely inappropriate.”
Making their argument
“It is apparent to anyone attending the trial or reading contemporaneous press coverage that the Principal Law Clerk plays a visible and prominent role in the trial,” Trump’s legal team argued. “Justice Engoron consults with her on almost every ruling, and they pass contemporaneous notes.”
Inappropriate insults
On Oct 3, Trump claimed on Truth Social that Greenfield was “running this case against me.” He also falsely claimed she was US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer’s “girlfriend.”
Doxxing
Trump’s posts included Greenfield’s full name, a picture of her, and a link to her social media. Both Greenfield and Judge Engoron were subjected to waves of hate mail, violent threats, and antisemitic insults.
Sheer volume
In fact, a transcript of the threats sent to Greenfield and Engoron filled 275 single-spaced pages. Both have also received threatening phone calls.
Clearing the hurdle
On Feb 2, the Manhattan Democratic Party revealed that Greenfield had been judged by party leaders as “most highly qualified.” According to Our Town, the announcement of Greenfield’s name by the New York County Democratic Committee prompted loud applause from the audience.
Next steps
Greenfield is now widely expected to be nominated by Democratic district leaders as the Party’s candidate for the judgeship. In the overwhelmingly Democratic city, this nomination essentially guarantees the nominee a win in November’s election.
Long term
Once elected, judges serve 14-year terms. After their term ends, they are permitted to seek reelection.
Solid partners
Greenfield and Engoron have worked together on Trump’s fraud case for over two years. According to New York Attorney General Letitia James, Trump, his organization, his sons, and his company’s executives fraudulently inflated his wealth by billions every year.
