Lauren Boebert’s Primary Challengers Choose to Ignore Her at Major Debate

On Monday, Boebert took the stage for a debate with her many challengers for Colorado’s 4th District. However, the infamously loud congresswoman was largely ignored by the other candidates, according to a report from the Colorado Sun.

“The other candidates on stage almost entirely ignored Boebert,” the Sun reported. Instead, they “stuck to their talking points.”

The closest the crowd got to a direct confrontation was when Chris Phelen asked, “Are you sick and tired of people that are coming to Congress just to get more social media hits? I am — and that’s what I think that someone up on this stage is doing.”

“I have used that bully pulpit to get a lot of things done,” Boebert claimed, defending her social media presence.

As NPR reported in December, the 118th Congress has been “the least productive in decades.” The House, controlled by Republicans like Boebert, passed just 27 bills that became law through the end of 2023, despite voting almost 750 times. For comparison, the last time the Republicans controlled the House and the Democrats controlled the Senate, the House passed 72 bills that became law.

According to the McCourt School of Public Policy, Boebert was one of the lowest-scoring House members for bipartisanship. The 30 representatives with the lowest scores were all Republicans.

Phelen highlighted Boebert’s “limited policy successes,” according to the Colorado Sun. Boebert blamed the Democrats.

Marked change

The candidates’ decision to mostly ignore Boebert marked a shift from the first debate, which took place on Jan 25. That night, Boebert “spent much of the evening fending off attacks” from her eight opponents, the Sun reported.

At one point, according to the Sun, state Representative Mike Lynch asked Boebert to “provide the definition of the word carpetbagger.” Boebert has faced intense criticism for her decision to switch from Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District to the 4th District.

In 2022, Boebert only defeated Democrat Adam Frisch by 550 votes. The 4th District, meanwhile, is the most Republican District in Colorado, according to the Cook Partisan Voting Index.

Cut and run

“For a member of Congress who has positioned herself as this heroic champion, who fights Democrats and liberals and progressives at all costs, it was a little bit strange to see her cut and run from a tough fight with a Democrat that could very well decide control of the U.S. House of Representatives in favor of a race that is obviously safely Republican,” a GOP political consultant told CPR. “You see this a lot with politicians, they’ll do anything to cling to power. And in this case, she really has.”

Back and forth

“This is not a coronation,” Boebert protested during the first debate. “This District needs somebody who understands [its] issues and has grown up with those issues,” state Senator Jerry Sonnenberg countered.

Voter anger

One undecided voter told the Sun that they believed Boebert “doesn’t understand” the “rural aspects of life.” The 4th District is sparsely populated, mostly covering Colorado’s Eastern Plains.

The voter “pointed to Boebert’s refusal to back more military aid for Ukraine and what that could mean for fertilizer,” the Sun reported.

Many controversies

If Boebert’s opponents want to attack her, they don’t lack ammunition. In September, for example, she was escorted out of a theatre for allegedly “vaping, singing,” and “fondling [her] date’s geni..als,” according to reports and video footage.
