Lauren Boebert Suggests Removing Mike Johnson From Speaker Position

Just four months after Kevin McCarthy became the first House Speaker in US history to be ousted, Rep. Boebert implied to Steve Bannon that Speaker Mike Johnson might soon become the second.

“I don’t want to get there, but we need leadership,” Boebert told Bannon on Thursday. “We have to have some follow through on the promises that we have made to the American people.”

Boebert reminded Bannon that she had been part of the Republican effort to amend the rules in the House in January 2023. Under the new rules, a single member could submit a motion to oust the speaker.

On Oct 2, Rep. Matt Gaetz filed a motion against McCarthy. A day later, the House voted to remove him. Gaetz’s Freedom Caucus, a group of particularly conservative Republicans, were joined by the minority Democrats in the vote to remove McCarthy.

Unprecedented

The vote gave McCarthy the inglorious honor of becoming the first House Speaker to be ousted. What followed was weeks of chaos as Republicans squabbled over who should replace him.

Eventual choice

Four candidates were considered. At first, it seemed like Rep. Jim Jordan would take the powerful position, but he failed to win a vote three times and was forced to give up. Eventually, Rep. Mike Johnson was chosen.

Same fate

In early January, Rep. Chip Roy said on Fox that some Republicans were considering booting Johnson. “I’m leaving it on the table,” he warned. “I’m not gonna say I’m gonna go file it tomorrow. I’m not saying I’m not going to file it tomorrow.”

“I think the speaker needs to know that we’re angry about it,” Roy explained, referring to Johnson’s agreement to support a bipartisan bill to fund the government. “He needs to know that we need to sit down at the table and try to solve this,” Roy said.

Not the only one

Roy is notable for not being a member of the Republican group that voted to oust McCarthy. On Thursday, Boebert told Bannon that several Republicans had suggested using the “lever of accountability” that allows a single member to propose ousting the speaker.

Boebert was making an appearance on Bannon’s podcast, called “War Room.” When Bannon was appointed as Trump’s “chief strategist” near the start of the former president’s term, the Southern Poverty Law Center released a statement claiming that Bannon “has no business in the White House.”

Extremist views

As the SPLC noted in its statement, Bannon has displayed various extremist views, from supporting the Confederacy to falsely claiming that “rape culture” is an “integral” facet of Islam. He has described himself as part of the “alt-right,” which the organization noted “is really just a rebranding of traditional white nationalism.”

On Jan 3, Boebert publicly thanked Johnson for endorsing her reelection campaign. “I am very grateful to have the support of Speaker Mike Johnson!” she wrote on X. “I look forward to working with him to get President Trump reelected and defend our majority.”

In December, Boebert announced that she was moving from Colorado’s third district to the state’s fourth district. The fourth district’s current representative, Ken Buck, announced that he would not seek reelection due to the GOP’s insistence “on this lie that the 2020 election was stolen.”

Boebert’s current district is described as a “toss-up” by the Cook Political Report. Boebert won her election in 2022 by only 546 votes. Colorado’s fourth district is described by the report as “solidly Republican.”

“Seat shopping isn’t something the voters look kindly upon,” said Richard Holtorf, a Republican state representative who is also running to represent Colorado’s fourth district. “She knew she’d lose in her own district and I’ll show her that she’ll lose here too.”
