Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, a member of the Colorado Republican party, is facing increasing disapproval from potential voters as she campaigns for election in a new district.
Rocky Road in New District
Since 2021, Boebert has been serving as the representative for Colorado’s 3rd District, gaining recognition for her firm pro-Trump stance within the House GOP caucus.
Narrow Victory and New Challenge
Following a narrowly contested race in the 2022 midterms, where she nearly lost her seat to Democrat Adam Frisch by a mere hundred votes, Boebert declared in December her intention to run for the House in Colorado’s 4th District.
Risky District Switch
Frisch is again vying for the 3rd District seat and is perceived to have a strong chance of defeating Boebert in his second bid. Meanwhile, Boebert has attributed her decision to switch districts to the significant impact of large out-of-state contributions to Frisch’s campaign.
Voters Skeptical
Representative Lauren Boebert, despite her prominent name, has faced a cool response from voters in the 4th District, overshadowing her lesser-known opponents.
Rising Disapproval
On Monday, further signs of voter dissatisfaction surfaced in a Wall Street Journal report about her campaign. In the article, potential GOP voters expressed strong disapproval of Boebert, with one, retired university worker Judy Scofield, notably criticizing her:
“I don’t appreciate, as a Christian, people saying they’re Christian to get your vote and then turning out to be a lowlife,” retired university employee Judy Scofield said. “And now I just kind of think of her as a lowlife.”
Theater Scandal
Scofield’s remarks refer to an event last year when Boebert was escorted out of a Denver theater for reportedly causing a disturbance during a performance. Subsequent video evidence led to additional claims of her vaping and inappropriately touching her date.
Boebert’s Apology
Initially denying any misconduct, Boebert eventually expressed regret for her actions, attributing them to the stress of her recent divorce.
Republican Discontent
“On Facebook she’s not been well received by Republicans,” shared Republican voter Tammi Flemming, mirroring similar views. “It’s the shenanigans and the drama and moving districts.”
A Firm “No” to Boebert
“I will not vote for her. Period,” stated retired medical contractor Chris Ware, having encountered Boebert at a fairground event. “She’s not one of us.”
‘Love Lauren Boebert’
Despite criticism, the Journal noted at least one positive comment about Boebert from Mark Peters, who was selling anti-Democrat t-shirts at the same event. “Love Lauren Boebert…She’s stood up to Democrats on everything,” Peters remarked.
A Strategic Move?
Analysts, political insiders, and the National Republican Campaign Committee (NRCC) are generally in agreement that Boebert’s move to a new district will likely enhance Republican chances of retaining that seat.
Mixed GOP Responses
In her new district, Boebert has received backing from U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson, and the NRCC is treating her as the incumbent. However, her move has drawn criticism from Republican state Rep. Richard Holtorf, one of her rivals, who labeled her a “carpetbagger” and accused her of joining the Washington establishment.
The Meaning of ‘Carpetbagger’
In a recent debate within the district, Boebert either couldn’t or wouldn’t explain the term “carpetbagger,” often used to describe someone moving to a new area for self-interest. Moreover, a straw poll at the debate showed Boebert ranking fifth out of nine candidates.
Uncertain Success
The success of Boebert’s district change is still uncertain, with history showing many politicians failing to convince voters of their genuine commitment beyond personal ambition, as noted by Christopher Galdieri, a political science professor at Saint Anselm College.
A Light of Hope
Boebert has some advantages: she remains within Colorado, is recognized for her conservative stance on issues like immigration and national debt, and is a staunch supporter of Trump, who is still popular among rural Republicans.
