Colorado attorney and newspaper columnist Mario Nicolais slammed Representative Lauren Boebert in a publication in her home state.
Disapproval of Electoral Strategies
Nicolais, who participated in a lawsuit to prevent former President Donald Trump from appearing on Colorado’s 2024 ballot, expressed disapproval of Boebert’s electoral strategies.
“Craven Sandbagger”
In a published piece by the Colorado Sun on Sunday, Nicolais wrote, “Such craven sandbagging to stay entrenched in power and the limelight did not go over well with many, even within a Republican party that has defended even her most wanton conduct. It is tough to call yourself a ‘fighter’ as you tuck tail and run from an electoral challenge.”
Switching Congressional District
This critique follows Boebert’s announcement of her intention to move from Colorado’s 3rd to the 4th Congressional District for the 2024 elections. Boebert has been the representative for the 3rd District since 2021.
A Close Victory
Boebert narrowly won her second term in 2022, defeating Democrat Adam Frisch by a slim margin of 546 votes.
Future Challenges
Frisch is set to run again in 2024, and Boebert would have also faced Republican challenger Jeff Hurd, a Grand Junction attorney, in the 3rd District.
Seven Candidates
Boebert is now among seven Republicans vying for nomination in the upcoming June primary for the 4th District.
“Chickening out of a Tough Race”
Nicolais commented to Newsweek, “I think the sandbagger problem will be very difficult for Boebert. In particular, I think the Republican primary electorate will have a tough time with her chickening out of a tough race.”
Safe Republican Seat
The 4th District, currently held by Republican Ken Buck, who won’t seek reelection, is considered a safer Republican seat.
Disagreement with GOP Narratives
In November, Buck diverged from certain Republican narratives, criticizing statements about the 2020 election being stolen and referring to the events of “January 6 as an unguided tour of the Capitol” as misleading.
Eroding Confidence in the Rule of Law
Busk, in a statement, stated, “These insidious narratives breed widespread cynicism and erode American confidence in the rule of law,”
Nicolais Praises Buck’s Stance
Nicolais commended Buck for his stance against inaccurate GOP narratives. He compared the upcoming elections to a complex game of musical chairs, emphasizing the need for policy-driven nominees who “care more about the people” instead of X followers.
Serve without Drama
Nicolais endorsed Jeff Hurd for the 3rd District, praising his potential to serve without drama like the incumbent.
2023 Beetlejuice Scandal
Nicolais further criticized Boebert for the 2023 “Beetlejuice” scandal when she was removed from a performance.
Removal from Theater
In September, Boebert and her male companion were escorted out of the Buell Theatre in Denver during a performance of the musical “Beetlejuice” following allegations by audience members of vaping, using a phone, singing, and causing a disturbance.
“Do you know who I am?”
According to the incident report, both individuals first refused to leave and made statements such as “Do you know who I am?” “I am on the board,” and “I will be contacting the mayor.”
Denial and Video Evidence
The congresswomen initially denied allegations of vaping and inappropriate behavior until surveillance video footage emerged, which was widely shared on social media. The footage shows Boebert vaping, exhaling smoke into the air, and dancing in her seat.
Apology Statement
Following the released footage and widespread criticism, Boebert issued a statement, taking responsibility for her actions and expressing regret for not displaying more decorum.
Physical Altercation
Last week, the lawmaker was engaged in a physical altercation with her ex-husband, Jayson Boebert, at a restaurant in Colorado. Jayson was subsequently arrested on six charges, which included “prohibited weapon use, third-degree assault, and obstructing a peace officer.”
Voter Concerns
Nicolais believes Boebert’s family issues might hurt her appeal, especially among older voters in the 4th District.

Following criticism, Boebert defended her decision to switch districts on social media, stating, “The right decision for those who support our conservative movement.”
