Jim Jordan Publicizes Angry Letter Sent to Treasury

On Feb 16, the Weaponization of the Federal Government subcommittee, which Jordan chairs, published a letter Jordan sent to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. The letter demanded Yellen provide a number of filings related to the Congressional investigation of Jan 6 rioters.

The details

Jordan’s letter specifically requested “all Bank Secrecy Act filings, including Suspicious Activity Reports, filed between January 15, 2021, and January 18, 2021, by Bank of America or any other financial institutions,” the Weaponization Committee announced on X.

Demanding access

“The Committee is authorized to conduct oversight of matters involving civil liberties and criminal law to inform potential legislative reforms,” the letter insists.

After Jan 6, Bank of America provided the FBI with a list of people who had made transactions in Washington DC between Jan 5 and Jan 7. That list was used by the FBI as evidence that certain individuals had participated in the Jan 6 riot.

Explaining the process

Jordan’s letter quoted one FBI agent’s testimony, in which the officer confirmed that “there was … information that was provided by Bank of America following a certain number of criteria that in essence aggregated a list of individuals that were supposedly living up in the New England area who … either had potentially made … certain credit card purchases … for hotel reservations or plane tickets, or potential purchases at certain gun stores in and around … January 6th or planned for the inauguration date.”

Voluntary assistance

As Jordan acknowledged in his letter, Bank of America provided this information voluntarily. No legal process forced Bank of America officials to collect and share the data.

That being said…

However, Jordan alleged that the FBI “was an active partner in the creation and receipt of this information.”

Cross-checking

Additionally, Jordan repeatedly highlighted the fact that the Bank of America’s dataset included a secondary category: Whether an individual had ever previously purchased a firearm. People who had done this were moved to the top of the list.

Not sharing

While Bank of America filed its Suspicious Activity Report with the FBI, it refused to share it with Jordan’s Committee. According to Jordan, Bank of America cited “various confidentiality provisions of the Bank Secrecy Act and the Anti-Money Laundering Act as prohibiting disclosure of these documents.”

Bank of America insisted in November that it had “followed all applicable laws in our interactions with the Trump Administration’s Treasury Department and law enforcement.”

Worried

Jordan is apparently concerned that Bank of America’s actions may have violated the civil rights of those included on the list.

Repeated attack

Jordan subpoenaed Bank of America in 2023. At the time, he sent another angry letter to the bank accusing it of refusing “to provide the Committee and Select Subcommittee with the filing it turned over to the FBI.”

Dubious claim

“Between Jan 15 and Jan 18, 2021, Trump was in the White House & Joe Biden was president-elect until the Jan 20, 2021 inauguration,” one X user responded.

Big danger

“NOOOO!” another user commented. “Not a letter! Oh boy, GOP means business now.”

Traitor

“Imagine a Republican defending people who took part in an insurrection. Or a republican defending people who tried to steal an election,” one user wrote. “That classifies Jordan as a Putin disciple. Proves he will never uphold the laws of America. All to defend one criminal he is afraid of.”

Serious toll

As of the third anniversary of Jan 6, over 1,260 people have been charged with crimes related to the riot. At least five people died as a result of the attack on the Capitol, and over 140 Capitol officers were injured.
