Internet users accused the Republican presidential candidates of electioneering, which means attempting to illegally influence the decision of a voter at the polls. Their actions at New Hampshire polling stations during Tuesday’s election was the center of the controversy.
Encouraging fans
Trump was recorded shouting at a crowd of supporters waiting by a poll station. “Don’t waste your time,” he called out. “Get in and vote!”
Making presence known
Trump was joined by Marjorie Taylor Greene, who had flown to New Hampshire to “support President Trump,” as she wrote on X. Greene is one of the names being floated for Trump’s running mate.
Dubious activities
Haley also made an appearance at a New Hampshire polling station. She was accompanied by New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu.
Against the law
New Hampshire law forbids all candidates and their representatives from carrying out any activites that could affect the well-being of voters within 10 feet of the entrance to a polling station. Candidates are also prohibited from posting any campaign materials in voting stations.
Outrage
X user and self-proclaimed “concerned citizen” Helen Giallombardo responded to a Fox clip of Haley at the polling station, claiming it “showed her engaging in electioneering.” “Talking to voters inside that tape,” Giallombardo wrote, “meant she was too close to the polling place door and that’s ILLEGAL in darn near every state in the US!”
Both sides
“Trump is certainly violating [electioneering] law,” one user commented. “Then again he doesn’t follow any laws in our country cuz he’s running to be a dictator.”
Unsure but angry
“Could this be considered voter intimidation?” One user asked, referring to Trump’s comments at the polling station. “I mean what [are the] laws about how close they can get to people at a voting facility?”
Illegality confirmed
Inderjeet Parmer, a university professor of politics, told The Mirror that Haley and Trump’s actions were “blatant” electioneering. “They say a fish rots from the head down,” he said. “That’s the GOP.”
Dedicated support
Trump’s calls to the crowd were met with cheers. One supporter told the former president that they had skipped work to see him in person.
Influential endorsement
Haley was endorsed by Governor Sununu, who last month said she was “the candidate with the momentum to win and get our party back on track to delivering conservative victories across the country.”
Unhappy camper
As the New Hampshire primary approached, Trump and Sununu traded insults online. “Why does Fox keep putting New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu on??? Every time I mention his name at a Rally, they BOOO like crazy. He’s all jacked up on something, but he ran for President, without having the courage to announce, and did really poorly. To have this loser on so much is really bad TV,” Trump posted on Truth Social, his social media platform.
Firing back
“I suppose it’s tough keeping up with the conversation given your advanced age,” Sununu replied on X. “Maybe try subtitles next time. Thanks for watching.”
Close result
With 93% reporting, Trump won the New Hampshire primary with over 50% of the vote. Haley received about 43%.
