GOP North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer has countered Donald Trump’s dismissal of a proposed border security deal as a “betrayal,” emphasizing the importance of seizing the opportunity to address border concerns.
“Moment to Do Something”
Cramer, in an interview with CNN, said, “If we don’t try to do something when we have the moment to do something, all of those swing voters in swing states for whom the border is the number one priority have every right to look at and say to us: ‘You blew your opportunity. We were ready to give you a shot and you blew it.'”
House Opposition
Negotiations between Republican senators and the Biden administration may hit a roadblock with House Republicans. Speaker Mike Johnson deemed the deal “dead on arrival,” aligning with former President Donald Trump’s stark opposition.
Zero Support Chance
Trump, the leading Republican contender for the 2024 presidential election, conveyed to supporters in Las Vegas on January 27, “There is zero chance I will support this terrible open borders betrayal of America.”
“Blame it on Me”
“I’ll fight it all the way. A lot of the senators are trying to say, respectfully, they’re blaming it on me. I say that’s okay. Please blame it on me. Please,” he added.
Border Security Approach
Trump continued, “If Joe Biden truly wanted to secure the border, he doesn’t need a bill. I did it without a bill.”
Response to Betrayal Claim
When asked whether Trump’s description of the deal as a betrayal was accurate, Senator Cramer replied, “Not at all.”
Border Security Critique
The senator’s remarks indicate that some Republicans might inadvertently weaken one of Trump’s main criticisms, border security, as the 2024 presidential race approaches.
Deal Sidelined
Last week, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, according to Punchbowl, indicated that the deal on border security and foreign aid might be sidelined as Trump aims to concentrate on immigration issues for his presidential campaign.
Politics in a Quandary
McConnell said, “We don’t want to do anything to undermine him [Trump],” adding, “the politics” had put them “in a quandary.”
Congress & Legislation
New York Democrat representative Dan Goldman also highlighted the opposition from Republicans to the security deal.
“That’s funny. I thought Congress was supposed to pass legislation. I thought Congress was supposed to address the problems in this country through legislation,” Goldman remarked.
Undermining the Deal
He accused Republicans of deliberately undermining the deal, alleging that this tactic is to provide former President Donald Trump with a campaign issue for the 2024 election.
Appalling Step
Senator Mitt Romney, a vocal Trump critic, stated to CNN last week that it would be “appalling” if GOP senators withdrew from a potential agreement to defend Trump. However, he later was reassured by McConnell’s commitment not to let campaign politics hinder support for the deal.
McConnell’s Active Involvement
Punchbowl also quoted McConnell as affirming his full engagement in addressing both the border issue and the coordination of funding for Ukraine and Israel.
Political Realities
Senator James Lankford, the lead Republican negotiator, emphasized the need to legislate on border issues while recognizing the political realities tied to Trump’s campaign, indicating a nuanced approach within the party.
Trump’s “Perfect” Deal
Trump voiced on Truth Social his expectation for a “perfect” border deal, setting a high bar for negotiations and expressing confidence in Speaker Mike Johnson’s alignment with his standards.
Shut Down the Invasion
Trump wrote, “I do not think we should do a Border Deal, at all, unless we get EVERYTHING needed to shut down the INVASION of Millions & Millions of people, many from parts unknown, into our once great, but soon to be great again Country!”
Wonderful Speaker
He added, “Also, I have no doubt that our wonderful Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, will only make a deal that is PERFECT ON THE BORDER.”
Biden’s Call to Action
President Joe Biden urged Congress to finalize the deal, touting it as unprecedented in its toughness and fairness for border reform. He highlighted the proposal’s potential to grant him emergency authority to manage border crises effectively.
