Georgia Could Send State National Guard Troops to Texas Border

On Friday, the state Senate approved a resolution supporting the allocation of state resources to the Texas border. Governor Brian Kemp is widely expected to follow that by officially sending troops to the Lone Star State.

The resolution approved by the state Senate supported “any action taken by Governor Brian Kemp to allocate resources and assistance to the protection of the southern border as well as the actions of Governor Greg Abbott to safeguard the people of Texas.”

The Senate approved the resolution by 31 votes to 15. On Monday, a committee in the state House approved a similar resolution.

Trump has vocally supported the concept of states sending troops to Texas. “We encourage all willing States to deploy their guards to Texas to prevent the entry of illegals,” Trump states, “and to remove them back across the border.”

On Jan 22, the Supreme Court ruled that Texas must allow federal border agents to remove razor wire placed by the state along the border. State agents have refused to allow federal officials to access certain areas along the border, a policy that made headlines in January after three migrants — two of them children — drowned in one such area.

Furious response

Abbott furiously defied the Supreme Court, claiming that Texas’s “constitutional authority to defend and protect itself” “is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary.”

Fact check

As Stephen Vladeck, a University of Texas School of Law professor, explained, “It’s pretty clear [that] under the Constitution, under our precedents, that immigration policy, control of the border really is ultimately in the federal government’s purview.”

Still, 25 Republican governors have signed a letter expressing support for Abbott in his standoff with the federal government. “States have every right to defend their sovereignty,” Florida Governor and failed presidential candidate Ron DeSantis stated.

On Feb 1, DeSantis announced that he would send 1,000 Florida National Guard troops to Texas. “We are pleased to increase our support to Texas as the Lone Star State works to stop the invasion across the border,” he stated.

In 2019, Governor Kemp sent 29 part-time state National Guard soldiers to Texas to help the state police the border.

The reality

Georgia Democrats slammed the GOP for killing a bipartisan immigration deal that would have severely increased security along the border. The “list of opportunities to secure the border thrown in the trash by congressional Republicans is long,” state Senator Elena Parent said. “But none of this list compares to the most recent debacle we have witnessed.”

Everything asked for

Republicans killed Biden’s border deal despite Democrats giving them “what they wanted,” as Democratic Senator Tina Smith complained. “We followed their instructions to the letter,” Democratic Senator Chris Murphy told reporters.

Unprecedented

“Just gobsmacked. I’ve never seen anything like it,” Democratic Senator Brian Schatz wrote on X. Senate Republicans “literally demanded specific policy, got it, and then killed it.”

Radical bill

The bill “reads like a GOP wish list,” the Nation reported. “Perhaps that’s because Republicans helped write the bill.… Among its provisions: $8 billion in emergency funding for ICE, including $3 billion to increase detentions; a mechanism to “shut down” the border if a certain number of people cross; $7 billion in emergency funding for Customs and Border Protection; and a continuation of Trump’s border wall.”
