Republican Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina offered a response to Fox News host Shannon Bream’s Sunday criticism regarding Republicans’ ‘vacation’ during critical discussions on a U.S.-Mexico border bill and additional aid for Ukraine
$61 Billion Ukraine Aid
Earlier this month, the Senate passed a bipartisan foreign aid bill focused on military support for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. This bill, receiving a 70-29 Senate approval, allocates $61 billion for Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Aid Bill Faces Hurdle in House
Now heading to the House, Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, has voiced objections to the bill, advocating for extra provisions concerning U.S.-Mexico border security.
Biden Calls for House’s Bill Support
After the Senate’s approval of the bill, President Joe Biden urged House members to support its progression, emphasizing the need for his signature. “I call on the speaker to let the full House speak its mind and not allow a minority of the most extreme voices in the House to block this bill even from being voted on,” Biden stated. “This is a critical act for the House to move.”
Yet, a 13-day recess in the House has delayed the bill’s movement.
Prioritizing Border Over Ukraine Aid
In her Fox News Sunday appearance, Mace highlighted the delay in further aid to Ukraine, citing the escalating tensions at the southern border.
“Before anything else happens with Ukraine and the U.S. funding for Ukraine, what I want to know is what are we doing about the invasion and international security at our southern border,” Mace asserted.
GOP’s ‘Vacation’
During the discussion, Bream brought attention to a rebuke from Biden regarding the stall, where the president previously criticized Republicans over the 13-day recess, accusing them of choosing ‘vacation’ over progressing the bill.
Haley Slams Congressional Break
Bream also referenced criticism from Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley. The ex-South Carolina governor argued, “The problem is Congress should have gotten in a room and kept going until they could get a strong bill, instead they went home on break for two weeks and then [Donald] Trump goes and tells them to not get anything done until after the general election.”
Is Trump Blocking Biden’s Victory?
Bream then inquired of Mace about the notion that Trump’s insistence on a ‘perfect’ border deal before November’s general election might be a tactic to deny Biden a legislative victory by obstructing the border bill.
Trump’s Influence on GOP
Bream posed a pointed question to the congresswoman: “What about this idea, this criticism that president Trump is calling the shots telling you guys what to do, you are not solving the border when you could, heat from the White House and from the GOP?”
No External Orders
Mace firmly dismissed the idea of being on a vacation and denied following external directives, saying, “Well first of all I don’t ever take a break, I work seven days a week and I also don’t take orders from anybody. I don’t care if they have a R or a D by their name, but the truth of the matter is, to fact check that remark, is that the House Republicans has sent over not one, but two border security bills.”
A Controversial $118 Bill
Mace weighed in following the release of the eagerly anticipated bipartisan border security bill earlier this month. The bill proposes significant reforms in border security, along with aid for Ukraine and Israel.
GOP-Led House Rejects Bill
Despite its comprehensive approach, the $118 billion package aimed at addressing critical southern border issues faced rejection from the GOP-led House, where conservative members argue it’s insufficient to stop illegal immigration.
Surge in Southwest Border Encounters
CBP data shows a continued rise in Southwest land border encounters, with December alone recording over 300,000. Some GOP members condition their support for additional aid to Ukraine on prioritizing border security, while others raise concerns over the spending levels in the proposed bill.
Stricter Border Provisions
The legislation includes provisions to expand ICE detention capacity from 34,000 to 50,000, restrict amnesty claims for illegal entrants, and authorize border closure under certain high-encounter conditions.
