Brian J. Karem, White House correspondent and political analyst, was at the Capitol on Jan 6. On Thursday, he railed against the idea of there being multiple narratives, arguing that what happened “was an insurrection.”
Had enough
“Tired of this sh…t,” Karem wrote. “‘January 6 competing narratives?’ F- That. I was there.”
Both sides
Karem was referring to the increasing tendency in the media to refer to false narratives about what happened on Jan 6 as legitimate. For example, the Associated Press ran an anniversary article titled “One attack, two interpretations.”
The reality
“People beaten,” Karem wrote. “The People’s House literally crapped on. Election officials threatened.”
Dangerous times
According to the Department of Justice, about 140 police officers were assaulted during the Jan 6 assault on the Capitol. However, a prosecutor said on Thursday that they believe the number is actually higher.
Unprecedented assault
The prosecutor described Jan 6 as possibly “the largest single-day, mass assault of law enforcement officers in our nation’s history.” About 900 people have been convicted of crimes relating to Jan 6, of which more than 700 have pleaded guilty.
Hiding in fear
“It was terrifying in the moment,” Rep. Peter Welch later said of the chaos. Rep. Annie Kuster spoke of hearing “the noises of the threat — the poinding on the door, the shouting in the hallways.”
Everyone was scared
On Jan 6, Republican Senator Josh Hawley was photographed raising his fist in solidarity with a crowd of MAGA supporters outside the Capitol. However, video footage that was later released showed him running away from the rioters. “Later that day, Sen. Hawley fled after those protesters he helped to rile up stormed the Capitol,” Rep. Elaine Luria stated.
Eyewitness
“I was there,” Karem reminded his audience. It “was an insurrection.”
Report from the time
“For those who have forgotten,” Karem wrote, “here is the report I filed … that dropped two days after the insurrection.” In the report, published in Playboy Magazine, Karem detailed how “the United States nearly died on January 6, 2021.”
Simple reason
“Donald Trump tried to kill it,” Karem argued in his report. “He told his supporters to fight. “We will never give up. We will never concede,” he said. And then he pushed his mob even further: “We will not take it anymore.” The genie was out of the bottle.”
Man responsible
“It was all for the benefit of Trump,” Karem wrote again on Thursday, “who couldn’t and still can’t accept defeat. TRAITOR.”
Failure
“The invasion of the Capitol building was an act of domestic terrorism,” Karem wrote in his 2021 report. “It was an armed insurrection. Trump loved it.” “But ultimately,” Karem noted, “Trump failed.”
