Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide in the Trump White House, had her lawyer respond on Friday to claims made by Tony Bobulinski, a key impeachment witness for the House Republicans.
Defamation Accusations
In a letter that ABC News initially received, Hutchinson’s attorney labeled Tony Bobulinski’s recent statements to the House Oversight Committee as “defamatory.”
Bobulinski, testifying before the House Oversight Committee, contributed to the Republican-led impeachment investigation into President Biden.
Meadows-Bobulinski Photo
Hutchinson’s attorney shared a photo purportedly showing an interaction between Bobulinski and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.
Legal Letters Exchanged
In a letter to the leading Democrat of the panel, Rep. Jamie Raskin, and the Republican chairman, James Comer, Cassidy Hutchinson, represented by her attorney William H. Jordan, contested allegations made by Tony Bobulinski.
Businessman Turned Biden Critic
Bobulinski, previously a business partner of Hunter Biden and now a critic of the Biden family, recently testified in the Republicans’ impeachment inquiry against President Joe Biden.
More than a Participant
Bobulinski, in a prepared statement released by ABC News, informed lawmakers that “Biden was more than a participant in and beneficiary of his family’s business; he was an enabler, despite being buffered by a complex scheme to maintain plausible deniability.”
Book Sparks Controversy
Last week, he labeled Hutchinson a “liar and a fraud” in the House panel, refuting a story from her book “Enough.” In the book, Hutchinson described an incident where Bobulinski, allegedly wearing a “ski mask,” met with Trump’s then-chief of staff, Mark Meadows, at a campaign event in Rome, Georgia.
The Bleachers Incident
In her book, Hutchinson recounts, “In the shadows of the bleachers, I observed Mark and Tony Bobulinski’s interaction through a gap in the vehicles. When they said their goodbyes, I saw Mark hand Tony what appeared to be a folded sheet of paper or a small envelope.”
Setting the Record Straight
Bobulinski, addressing the panel, firmly stated, “Cassidy Hutchinson is an absolute liar and a fraud.” He refuted her claims, insisting he wasn’t wearing a ski mask and that “[Meadows] didn’t hand me a single thing.”
Entering Impeachment Drama
Responding to Bobulinski’s allegations, Hutchinson’s lawyer stated in the letter that although she “has no desire to get involved in the impeachment investigation,” she “now finds herself the subject of defamatory comments made by Mr. Bobulinski in his testimony to that Committee.”
Attorney Presents Key Evidence
The letter also included a photo, claimed by Hutchinson’s attorney to have been taken by her during the supposed encounter between Meadows and Bobulinski at the Trump rally.
Memory Under Question
In the letter, Hutchinson’s lawyer addressed Bobulinski’s sworn testimony: “Mr. Bobulinski claims under oath that he was not wearing a mask, that Mr. Meadows did not hand him anything, and that Ms. Hutchinson was ‘fabricating facts.’ Perhaps Mr. Bobulinski’s memory is impaired about the meeting, and a picture would help refresh his recollection.”
Nighttime Meeting
The photo presented seems to depict the two meeting at night between SUVs, with Bobulinski donning a hat and a black mask.
No Ski Mask
During his appearance before the House Oversight panel, Bobulinski recalled meeting Meadows at the rally in Georgia, mentioning he had private security with him. When asked if he was wearing a ski mask, Bobulinski denied it, saying, “I was not wearing a ski mask.”
Hutchinson’s Photo
Jordan, Hutchinson’s lawyer, stated in the letter, “Ms. Hutchinson took a photo of Mr. Bobulinski meeting with Mr. Meadows from her vantage point just on the other side of the vehicle from their conversation. A copy is attached to this letter. Mr. Bobulinski may be somewhat hard to make out in this image — since he is wearing his Penn State hat … and a mask.”
Standing Firm
Hutchinson’s lawyer further asserted, “Ms. Hutchinson stands by what she witnessed that night and wrote in her book.”
Legal Battles Ahead
In response to the claims, Jesse Binnall, Bobulinski’s attorney, stated, “We will see to it that Ms. Hutchinson soon gets her day in court to tell her story in front of a jury and the truth will prevail.”
