Former RNC Chair Slams Lara Trump’s Plan for Group

Speaking on MSNBC, Michael Steele tore into Trump’s daughter-in-law for her assertion that the Republican National Committee should dedicate itself entirely to reelecting Trump.

“I will start,” Steele said, “by just saying, wrong answer. That is not the number one responsibility of the RNC — to elect Donald Trump.”

Wider responsibilities

As Steele explained, the RNC has a responsibility to assist all Republican candidates, not just the presumptive party nominee.

Mechanisms for victory

According to Steele, the RNC’s main job is establishing, maintaining, and improving “the infrastructure every candidate will need” to have the best chance of winning their particular race.

Steele was responding to a speech Lara Trump gave several days earlier, in which she announced that “every single penny” controlled by the RNC “will go to the number one and only job of the RNC, that is electing Donald J. Trump as president of the United States and saving this country.”

Planned takeover

The former president formally endorsed his daughter-in-law for RNC chair, to replace the current long standing chair Ronna McDaniel. Trump is allegedly upset at McDaniel’s refusal to wholly dedicate the RNC to his reelection campaign.

Dedicated support

Lara Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, has been a reliable and dedicated supporter of her father-in-law since his 2016 presidential campaign. In that campaign, she led a tour touting Trump as a force empowering women, despite widespread criticism of his misogynistic comments, which included the now-infamous admission that “when you’re a star, they let you do … anything.… Grab ‘em by the pussy. You can do anything.”

Dubious involvement

Lara Trump also spoke at the “Save America” rally on Jan 6, 2021, that was followed by the deadly Capitol riot. During the 2020 election, she campaigned for Trump with infamous far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer.

“Let me give you a little bit of training here,” Steele said on MSNBC in response to Lara Trump’s remarks, “since you want the job.”

A little training

“You are required to organize and coordinate every state party and the territories of the United States who are in the Republican family,” Steele explained. “You are to provide them the platform from which you will launch a platform to talk about what the party believes in.”

Faux apology

“Oh, I’m sorry, we don’t have a platform, so that is your number one priority, madame co-chair?” Steele said. “No, I don’t think so.”

“You gotta understand what a party is there for,” Steele emphasized.

Time’s up

“Ronna was in a no-win situation,” an anonymous Republican source told Marc Caputo, who reported on Trump’s attempt to take over the RNC in February. “It was a wonder she held on this long. Perhaps she held on too long.”

Tensions rising

At one point in the 2020 campaign, according to Caputo, Trump’s campaign manager and McDaniel went months refusing to talk to each other.

Taking control

“There are too many people in that RNC building in Washington that think they call the shots. They don’t,” one ex-RNC adviser said to Caputo. “This is Trump’s party and Trump is taking this back to the way it used to be: the nominee is in complete control, and his people are running the show.”

Paying bills

Caputo suggested that Trump might be seeking greater control over the RNC to use the organization to help pay his legal bills, which have skyrocketed recently.
