Florida State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D) expressed disbelief at Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s participation in a Republican fundraiser in Florida commemorating the third anniversary of the insurrection.
Hoping for a joke
“Just another day in Florida where the local Republican Party in Osceola County is hosting an ‘anniversary’ event to mark January 6th,” Eskamani wrote on X. “Marjorie Taylor Green is the “special” guest. Was really hoping this was a joke when I first saw it.”
High prices
According to the event listing, tickets ranged from $45 to $1,000. Guests could expect to meet Greene or take a photo with her, depending on the ticket purchased.
Honor pass
Matt De Vlieger reported that one of the passes on sale was for “specifically honoring Republican women.” “This is a rare opportunity to engage with a leading figure who believes in a government working for its people,” a promotional message for the event read. People “who pay,” De Vlieger noted.
Inappropriate event
“Who celebrates a crime?” One X user wrote in response to Eskamani’s post. “Oh yeah, I almost forgot who I’m referring to…”
Remembering the events
“They’re throwing a party to celebrate the anniversary of their attempted coup,” another user commented. “The more radical they get,” another wrote, “the harder it will become for them to win elections.”
Purple area
Rep. Eskamani has represented an area of central Florida for six years. The I-4 Corridor, which includes Eskamani’s districts, has historically been a swing region.
Important area
“It’s every candidate’s dream prize,” De Vlieger argued, that has “historically made or broken Presidents.” Florida itself has often been a key swing state in national elections.
Greene’s actions
Greene was one of the 147 Republicans who voted to overturn the results of the 2020 election. She has continued to spread false claims that the election was fraudulent.
Sharp criticism
In March, Gabriel Sterling, a senior Georgia election official and Republican, criticized Greene for spreading “disproven conspiracies” after a heated meeting with the Republican-led House Election Integrity Caucus. In the meeting, Greene repeated many false claims about the election, arguing without evidence that there was “complete and total fraud” and that “Trump won Georgia.”
Greene’s claims
One of Greene’s claims was that “thousands” of dead voters had their ballots counted in Georgia. This has been repeatedly disproven, and Sterling reminded Greene that only four were ever identified.
Consequences
The day after Eskamani posted her criticism, Westgate Resorts canceled the fundraising event. “Please be advised that Westgate was not made aware of the purpose of this event when we were approached to host a book signing,” Westgate Resorts said in a statement.
