Far-Right Activist Promises to End Democracy and Conservative Audience Cheers

Speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Jack Posobiec announced the imminent “end of democracy” — and received cheers from the audience.

“Welcome to the end of democracy,” Posobiec said to open the annual event. “We are here to overthrow it completely.”

“We didn’t get all the way there on January 6,” Posobiec admitted, “but we will endeavor to get rid of it and replace it with this right here,” he said. He then raised his fist.

“All glory is not to government,” Posobiec continued. “All glory to God!” The audience responded with cheers.

In 2021, the Southern Poverty Law Center noted that “Posobiec is well-known for collaborating with neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and spreading conspiracy disinformation on Twitter.”

The organization describes Posobiec as “a political operative and internet performer of the anti-democracy hard right, known primarily for creating and amplifying viral disinformation campaigns.”

One SPLC investigation “found that Posobiec — a Trump favorite — has collaborated with white supremacists, neo-fascists and antisemites for years, while producing propaganda that Trump and his inner circle have publicly celebrated.”

Wake up

“Jack Posobiec’s extensive ties to white supremacists should serve as a wake-up call for anyone who hasn’t made the connection between Trump’s MAGA movement and hate,” the lead SPLC investigator asserted.

In 2023, the SPLC reported that CPAC hosted a “convicted sex offender,” allowing him to man a booth at the conference. The same year, the organization noted that “white nationalist Nick Fuentes booked a hotel across the street from the Conservative Political Action Conference for a racist, post-CPAC rally.”

In 2022, CPAC was held in Hungary, which is run by Victor Orbán. According to SPLC, Orbán has become infamous for “his antisemitism, racism, and efforts to derail Hungary’s democracy by using state funds to aid his re-election.”

In December, Trump made headlines for promising to only be a dictator “on Day One.” “This guy, he says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’” Trump joked to the crowd, pointing to Sean Hannity, who had asked Trump to confirm he would respect democracy. “I said, ‘No, no, no, other than Day One.’ We’re closing the border. And we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.”

Open plan

As the New Republic noted, “Trump and his allies have boasted about their extremist plans for a potential second term.” His allies have promised to “come after” their enemies, with Trump making headlines for promising to “root them out” like “vermin.”

Additionally, the New Republic reported that powerful Trump allies — and potential vice presidents, like Senator J.D. Vance and Representative Elise Stefanik — have confirmed that they would have worked to keep Trump in power on Jan 6, 2021.

Walking to disaster

In December, Republican Liz Cheney warned that the US was “sleepwalking into dictatorship.” Trump “told us what he will do,” she argued, claiming it was “very easy to see the steps that he will take.”

Concrete steps

In January, Asli Aydintasbas explained on Politico that “there is a particular rhythm and process to dismantling a democracy … laws to change, institutions to dismantle, alliances to build.” Trump has made a start on this, Aydintasbas explained, though he argued the former president would need more than four more years to complete the process.

Sound the warning

Nevertheless, a February poll showed that three-quarters of Republicans support Trump being a “dictator for a day.” In November, the Washington Post published an article arguing that “a Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable.”
