In September, Enrique Tarrio, the ex-chairman of the Proud Boys, received a 22-year federal prison sentence for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach, facing charges of “seditious conspiracy”.

The Justice Department highlighted that the Proud Boys were instrumental in initiating the Capitol attack, noting Tarrio’s role in forming a subgroup within the organization known as the Ministry of Self Defense.

Structured Command System

This subgroup, according to authorities, organized a structured command system, meticulously selected the time and location for their actions, and actively recruited individuals “prepared to engage in physical violence if necessary.”

During the Capitol siege, where Proud Boys members clashed with police, Tarrio was actively encouraging them through encrypted messages and social media platforms, later asserting, “Make no mistake… we did this.”

Roger Stone, a seasoned Republican strategist linked to Nixon and dubbed by Ted Cruz as “Trump’s henchman and dirty trickster,” appears to be the crucial link between the Proud Boys and Trump’s campaign.

A key figure in the “Stop the Steal” initiative after Trump’s 2020 defeat, Stone reportedly used Proud Boys for security at a GOP conference in Oregon in 2018. Notably, Tarrio has been seen wearing a “Roger Stone is innocent” T-shirt on multiple occasions.

The House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack disclosed that Stone frequently communicated with Proud Boys members, including Tarrio, before the insurrection in an encrypted chat named Friends of Stone.

A new video clip, exclusively obtained by Rolling Stone, shows Roger Stone engaging in a phone conversation with Enrique Tarrio on November 5, 2020, in his Fort Lauderdale office. This footage is part of Christoffer Guldbrandsen’s documentary “A Storm Foretold,” which explores how Stone’s “Stop the Steal” campaign contributed to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“Stone had been busy, launching ‘Stop the Steal’ and mobilizing Trump allies and had just gotten off the phone with General Flynn, when Enrique Tarrio, the national leader of the Proud Boys, called. Tarrio’s voice was inaudible, but Stone is heard telling him that he is still waiting for an update from the campaign – before he says he needs to talk without the camera rolling,” Guldbrandsen told Rolling Stone.

Guldbrandsen shares, “Tarrio was a fixture around Stone – helping him out, working with him on his social media, and even organizing a fundraiser for Stone just before his trial.” He added that Stone maintained contact with Tarrio until and even after the Jan. 6 attack through encrypted apps.

Longtime Allies

Guldbrandsen’s aim with “A Storm Foretold” is to show that the Proud Boys, a group central to the Capitol attack’s violence, were tightly linked to the Trump campaign through Stone, a longtime ”friend and ally”  of Donald Trump.

Political Insights

Guldbrandsen’s “A Storm Foretold” could potentially provide far more than just a glimpse into the convoluted corridors of political maneuvering. It might prove to be a crucial resource for Americans to comprehend the complex web linking political campaigns, social movements, and their unintended effects on the democratic process, particularly in the context of America’s multifaceted policies and the impending 2024 elections.
