On Tuesday, the House of Representatives voted against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Greene, who led the charge to impeach Mayorkas, was furious, and her Democratic colleagues wasted little time rubbing the loss in her face.
Burn
The Trump-Putin-MAGA faction, headed up by the distinguished gentlelady from Georgia,” Democratic Representative Jamie Raskin said in a speech on the House Floor, “has been given this worthless trinket of a consolation prize, the opportunity to bring a slapstick impeachment drive against a cabinet member of unimpeachable integrity.”
Last minute shift
One of the deciding votes was from Republican Blake Moore, who switched his vote from a yes to a no. He did this in order to ensure that Republicans could restart the process.
Unimpeachable
Majorkas “has obviously committed no treason,” Raskin said, “no bribery, no high crimes, no misdemeanors, nothing indictable or even ‘in-dik-table,’ if you prefer.”
Poking fun
Raskin’s intentional mispronunciation was a joke at Greene’s expense. During a House Homeland Security Committee debate over whether to impeach Mayorkas, Greene incorrectly pronounced ‘indictable’ in the same way.
Internet piles on
The gaffe drew widespread mockery. “Maybe a person who can’t even read/pronounce indictable,” one user on X asked, “shouldn’t be allowed to use it as a political weapon?”
Sharing the burn
“This is too good not to share!” Democratic Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett wrote on X alongside a video of Raskin’s comments. “My Oversight Ranking Member, Jamie Raskin, delivered a bit of a burn to Marjorie Taylor Greene!”
Explaining the details
“INCYMI: She didn’t know how to pronounce indictable & instead reverted to her favorite familiar word,” Crockett wrote. “Even better is that MAGA Mike wants to make her an impeachment manager.”
Nicknames
“MAGA Mike” is a reference to House Speaker Mike Johnson, who led the Republican effort to assist Trump in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 election. He strongly supported the effort to impeach Mayorkas.
Poor show
“The R’s really aren’t sending their best to DC,” Crockett wrote. “Or is this their best? Reading & counting keeps tripping them up from doing their jobs.”
Another reference
Crockett was likely referencing another widely shared mistake from Greene, in which she struggled and eventually failed to read out a large number. “There is one million, five hundred and twenty-four, five hundred and twenty-four and four hundred eighty-one thous— this is over one million,” she said.
Too much to make fun of
Greene made the mistake right after complaining about the decline in mathematics proficiency among American kids. “Marjorie Taylor Greene, here showing her math illiteracy while speaking about math illiteracy is like a freakin SNL skit… only this is recorded in the Congressional Record for posterity,” one user commented on X.
Failed attempt
The impeachment attempt failed in a nail-biting 216-214 vote. Four Republicans joined the Democrats to shoot down the measure.
Last-minute appearance
At one point, Democratic Representative Al Greene was wheeled into the chamber still wearing his hospital scrubs from an emergency room surgery. “We have a razor-thin margin here, and every vote counts,” Speaker Mike Johnson said. “Sometimes when you’re counting votes and people show up when they’re not expected to be in the building, that changes the equation.”
Second attempt
Greene and Johnson told reporters that Republicans would attempt to impeach Mayorkas again. “My colleagues who voted no,” Greene said, “I think they’ll be hearing from their constituents.”
Total sham
A spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security said the “baseless impeachment should never have moved forward; it faces bipartisan opposition, and legal experts resoundingly say it is unconstitutional. If House Republicans are serious about border security, they should abandon these political games.”
