Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing criticism from right-wing circles after mentioning his busy schedule, explaining that he is occupied “with a black wife raising three black children on the west side of the city of Chicago,” in response to questions about when he might visit the U.S.-Mexico border.
Condemning Federal Government
Johnson, along with figures like New York City Mayor Eric Adams, has condemned the federal government and the Biden administration for insufficient resources in addressing a migrant surge that has swelled to nearly one million individuals in the past three months, escalating from last fiscal year’s peak.
Cities Overwhelmed by Migrant Wave
In the backdrop of this migrant wave, cities like Chicago, New York, and Denver—all led by Democrats—have emerged as key destinations.
Busing Migrants
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has transported over 80,000 of these migrants via bus after they crossed the southern border.
Border Security Push
This action is part of a broader ideological conflict spearheaded by the Texas Republicans and conservatives from various states who advocate for enhanced security measures.
School Attending Children
During a public event Monday, when asked if he would be going to the U.S. southern border, Johnson replied, “I have children who attend schools who have soccer games, y’all. You know, you all are asking me as if I’m not a parent in this city. I get it. I’m mayor, but you’re asking me to give you a date.”
“I Have a Wife”
He added, “Do you understand that you have not had a mayor like me? I get that. I have a wife. I have children, they have schedules. And plus, we still have public safety that we have to address, we still have the unhoused that we have to address, I still have a budget that I have to address.”
Raising Three Black Children
“And I’m doing all of that with a Black wife, raising three Black children on the west side of the city of Chicago. I am going to the border as soon as possible,” the mayor concluded.
Visit Canceled
In October, Johnson called off his scheduled visit to the border, asserting his ongoing intention to witness the situation firsthand.
Deputy Mayor Visit
However, rather than attending personally as initially planned, the mayor delegated the task to Beatriz Ponce de Leon, the deputy mayor overseeing immigrant, migrant, and refugee rights. Alongside a small delegation, she toured various cities in Texas along the border.
Criticism of Social Media
The mayor’s comments attracted sharp criticism from conservatives on social platforms like X, with some questioning his decision to run for mayor if personal obligations hindered his official duties.
“Forced into the Job”
One user wrote on X, “Didn’t Brandon Johnson campaign to be mayor? He is acting like he was forced into the job lol.”
Only Person Raising Family
“Does he think he’s the only person in America raising a family? Help! I Am Completely in Over My Head at My Job,” another stated.
“He Needs Jesus”
Fox News host Harris Faulkner noted, “So wait, the far-left Mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, says he can’t do his job because he’s Black?” There are great Americans who do their jobs every day— no matter what their skin color is. Not any part of what we look like determines OUR WILL. He needs Jesus.”
Lawsuits Against Chicago
The migrant surge has also led to legal actions against Chicago, with several lawsuits filed by residents in January, including Black Democrats, in response to the influx of migrants.
Biden is Responsible
They attribute responsibility for the border crisis to President Joe Biden rather than individuals such as Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
10,000 Arrival per day
In December alone, approximately 300,000 migrants entered the United States through Mexico, averaging nearly 10,000 per day.
2.5 million Migrants Arrived
Data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP) indicates that federal border agents encountered about 2.5 million migrants last year, surpassing the previous record high set the year before.
