Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson faced severe criticism after expressing frustration over Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s decision to send illegal immigrants to Chicago without prior notification.
Johnson’s Social Media Outcry
On Sunday, Johnson took to social media platform X to voice his dismay that a plane from San Antonio had transported hundreds of immigrants from the U.S. Southern Border to Chicago, all without his prior knowledge.
Mayor’s Tweet on Arrival of 350 Asylum Seekers
The mayor tweeted, “This morning, just after 1 a.m., a private Boeing 777 originating from San Antonio, Texas, landed at the Rockford/Chicago airport carrying 350 asylum seekers. There was no communication from Texas, and the City of Chicago was alerted by authorities in Rockford regarding the flight.”
Pointing the finger at Texas Governor Abbot
Johnson added, “Upon landing, asylum seekers were placed on buses chartered by Texas Governor Greg Abbott and dropped in various surrounding suburbs, left to find their way to the city. This is the second recorded instance of the Texas governor transporting asylum seekers via private plane.”
Public Reaction to Mayor’s Grievances
The mayor’s grievances were met with criticism, particularly from conservative social media users. They pointed out the irony in Johnson’s reaction, given Chicago’s status as a sanctuary city.
Democratic Policies as the Root Cause
Critics urged the mayor to address his concerns with the Democratic Party and President Joe Biden, citing their policies as the root cause of the situation with the large influx of migrants.
U.S. Facing Unprecedented Migrant Surge
The U.S. southern border continued to witness an unprecedented surge in illegal migrant encounters in December, breaking previous records.
Homeland Security Reports 225,000+ Border Encounters in a Month
Preliminary Homeland Security statistics reveal that border authorities encountered over 225,000 migrants along the U.S.-Mexico border in the last month, marking the highest monthly total since 2000.
Need Biden’s Phone Number
Texas Representative Chip Roy responded sarcastically, suggesting Johnson should contact President Biden.
Roy wrote, “You need @JoeBiden’s phone number? I am sure one of your Democrat U.S. Senators or Congress critters has it.”
Texas Received Similar Notice
Similarly, political strategist Logan Dobson criticized the mayor, indicating that Texas received as much notice as Chicago did about the arrival of the immigrants.
Critique of Sanctuary City Status
Conservative podcast host Michael Berry sarcastically commented on Chicago’s designation as a sanctuary city, telling Mayor Johnson to “Give them ‘sanctuary.'”
“Take it up with your pal Joe”
Journalist Miranda Devine remarked, “He’s blaming the Texas state government, but this has the MO of a Biden administration flight – private charter, 1 am, no communication. Hey Brandon, take it up with your pal Joe.”
Accusations of Political Motives
Jack Lombardi II, a political commentator, accused the mayor of attempting to shift blame onto Governor Abbott. Lombardi argued that the underlying motive was to influence future census counts and maintain federal influence, attributing the situation to the Biden administration’s policies.
Mayor’s Continued Complaints
Mayor Johnson has been vocal about the impact of the migrant crisis on Chicago. He previously described Governor Abbott’s actions as “reckless” and “dangerous” in a CNN interview, calling for additional resources to handle the surge of migrants.
