Biden Supporters Insist the President is ‘Sharp’ and ‘Focused’ Amidst Allegations

President Joe Biden’s allies firmly stood up for him on Sunday, responding to a special counsel report that cast doubt on his age and mental fitness. They criticized the report for its ‘gratuitous, unnecessary and inaccurate personal remarks.’

Mitch Landrieu, once a senior adviser and now a national co-chair of Biden’s re-election campaign, dismissed concerns about Biden’s capability on NBC News’ ‘Meet the Press.’

He asserted, “This kind of sense that he’s not ready for this job is just a bucket of B.S. It’s so deep [that] your boots will get stuck under.”

Landrieu, drawing on his extensive experience with Biden, vouched for his mental sharpness, saying, “I’ve been knowing him for 30 years. I have met with him personally. I’ve met with him with two people, five people, 10 people. I have been on trips with him, crisscrossing the country, rebuilding America based on this incredible infrastructure bill that was passed. And I’m telling you, this guy is tough. He’s smart. He’s on his game.”

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas also stepped up to defend President Biden, saying, “The most difficult part about a meeting with President Biden is preparing for it because he is sharp, intensely probing and detail-oriented and focused.”

25th Amendment Speculations

Regarding the speculation about invoking the 25th Amendment to replace the president, Mayorkas firmly stated, ‘Not at all.’ He continued, “I don’t engage in politics. I’m responsible for governing and following the president’s agenda, which I scrupulously do.”

Biden Portrayal Criticized

This stance echoed the broader reaction from the White House and the president himself this week, as Democrats criticized special counsel Robert Hur for his report’s remarks, which raised concerns about the president potentially portraying himself as an ‘elderly man with a poor memory’ in court.

President’s Frustration

Addressing reporters at the White House on Thursday, President Biden expressed frustration over the allegations in the report, questioning, “How in the hell dare he raise that? Frankly, when I was asked the question, I thought to myself it wasn’t any of their damn business.”

The report referred to Biden’s supposed inability to recall the date of his son’s death.

No Charges, But Criticisms

While Robert Hur, in his report, chose not to file charges against Biden for his handling of classified documents post-vice presidency, he did describe Biden in interviews as ‘a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory,’ noting his struggles with specific dates.

Politically Motivated Report?

Vice President Kamala Harris, at a gun violence prevention event in Washington on Friday, dismissed the report as ‘inaccurate and inappropriate,’ criticizing the portrayal of the President as factually incorrect and ‘clearly politically motivated, gratuitous.’

Senator John Fetterman, D-Pa., echoed these sentiments during a Biden-Harris campaign call about gun violence on Friday, labeling the 350-page document a ‘smear’ full of ‘cheap shots,’ and ‘taking things out of context, or even just inventing.’

He added, “You don’t need 350 pages to say that … so clearly there was an agenda there.”

Although Robert Hur is not a partisan figure, his appointment as a U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland in 2017 was made by Trump, and he has previously served in the Justice Department under the Trump administration, working closely with Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

Addressing the media at the White House, Ian Sams, a spokesperson for the White House Counsel’s office, acknowledged the report’s ‘gratuitous’ nature.

Hur Felt ‘Pressure to Criticize’

Sams suggested that Hur might have felt compelled to criticize Biden due to not indicting anyone, saying, “When you are the first special counsel in history, not to indict anybody, there is pressure to criticize and to make, you know, statements that maybe in otherwise you wouldn’t make.”
