On Sunday, Trump was speaking at a rally in Rochester, New Hampshire, when he started slurring his words. A clip of the former president speaking unintelligibly for a few seconds was shared on X, formerly Twitter, by the Biden campaign.

Trump was speaking about the border before the incident. “You don’t have to be a total genius,” he started. “Remain in Mexico until you’ve—” At this point, he started slurring.

A clip of the moment was shared by the Biden-Harris HQ account on X. The video received more than 200,000 views.

What’s he saying?

Biden’s reelection campaign, which runs the account, described Trump as being “unintelligible.” It was reshared by a pro-Biden account which commented, “Why won’t the media cover [Trump’s] mental decline?”

Widespread confusion

“Hey media?” another account commented. “Can you cover ANYTHING about Trump slurring his words? He is not healthy.”

“This needs to be discussed,” one user wrote. Trump “is definitely showing signs of cognitive decline.”

Clear as day

However, other users claimed that Trump was intelligible. “What’s the problem?” one user wrote, claiming that Trump said “until you’re vetted and everything else. [sic]”

“Until you’re vetted and everything else,” one user wrote under the clip. “I hate Trump’s guts but I clearly heard what he said.”

Not the only time

On Friday, Trump made headlines for confusing his Republican rival, Nikki Haley, with Nancy Pelosi. “They never report the crowd on January 6,” Trump told a crowd in New Hampshire. You know Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, Nikki Haley, did you know they destroyed all of the information, all of the evidence, everything, deleted and destroyed all of it? All of it.”

Mixing things up

“Like Nikki Haley is in charge of security,” Trump continued. “We offered her 10,000 people, soldiers, National Guards, whatever they want. They turned it down. They don’t want to talk about that. These are very dishonest people.”

Doubly mistaken

Nikki Haley was not involved with security during the Jan 6 riot. According to CNN, Nancy Pelosi wasn’t either, though Trump has repeatedly claimed she was.

The day before, Trump appeared to become disoriented during another rally in New Hampshire while talking about stopping “regulators from trying to de-bank you.” “From your — you know, your political beliefs, what they do,” Trump continued. “They want to de-bank you, and we’re going to de-bank — think of this. They want to take away your rights. They want to take away your country. The things they’re doing, all-electric cars. Give me a break.”

In the same speech, Trump bragged about passing a test that can detect early signs of dementia. He also claimed he was “cognitively better” than “20 years ago.”

Doubtful

Tim O’Brien, a writer who knew Trump two decades ago, disagreed. “I flew around with him in his plane and walked his golf courses with him 20 years ago,” O’Brien wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “Not very cognitively together then. Much less cognitively better now.”

The age problem

Both Biden and Trump have faced scrutiny due to their age. According to polls, about two-thirds of voters think Biden is too old to be president again, and roughly half think the same about Trump.

Not fighting fit

“The age issue is one that if Trump gets tarred with the same brush as Biden, it really hurts him,” a poll director told the New York Times. In one October poll of Pennsylvania voters, those who thought both were too old to be president heavily favored Biden over Trump when forced to choose.
