With a potential Biden-Trump rematch on the horizon this year, a recent NBC News poll reveals a surprising shift in public opinion.
Surprising Shift

Forty percent of respondents feel Trump’s presidency surpassed expectations, while 31 percent say it met their expectations. However, 29 percent believe it fell short.
Who’s Impressed by Biden’s Tenure?

In contrast, Biden’s presidency faces harsher scrutiny: only 14 percent think he’s exceeded expectations, 42 percent feel he’s underperformed, and 44 percent say he’s met expectations.
This poll, surveying 1,000 registered voters, was conducted from January 26 to 30.
Dominant in GOP Primaries

Donald Trump has clinched victories in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, solidifying his path towards the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Despite facing legal challenges, including 91 charges across four criminal cases, Trump continues to gain support within the Republican Party.
Rising Approval

Interestingly, the latest NBC News poll shows an improved perception of Trump’s presidency compared to August 2018. Back then, only 29% thought his administration was performing better than expected, with 43% saying it met expectations and 27% finding it worse.
Overwhelming Support

Now, Republican voters particularly view Trump’s presidency more positively, with 80% rating it better than expected and just 6% worse, while 24% think it was as expected.
He’s aiming for a significant delegate win in the Super Tuesday contests on March 5, a crucial step towards securing the nomination.
Democrats Divided

Within the Democratic Party, views on Biden’s presidency are notably mixed. Approximately 52% of Democrats believe his administration is performing as they expected, while 30% view it more favorably than anticipated, and 18% consider it worse than expected.
This sentiment comes as economic concerns and border security dominate the conversation among voters in the lead-up to the 2024 election.
Nostalgia for Past Presidencies

Thomas Gift from University College London, commenting to Newsweek, suggests that some of the nostalgia for past administrations may stem from current economic pressures, such as the high cost of groceries.
Trump Remembered for Affordability

Gift argues that they may favor Trump when “remembering a time when they could go to the grocery store and not feel like they had to take out a second mortgage to pay for a carton of milk.”
Fluctuating Food Prices

Fluctuations in food prices have been notably volatile due to a variety of factors, such as extreme weather conditions, the ongoing war in Ukraine, increased costs for feed and fertilizer, and supply chain challenges.
Additionally, some food companies have seized this opportunity of rapid change to enhance their profits.
Food Prices on the Rise

The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a 2.7% increase in food prices from December 2022 to December 2023. This rise is considerably lower than the 10.4% increase observed in the preceding year of 2022.
Fondness Grows Over Time

He also notes a common trend where the public often view the past with “more fondness and for the esteem of presidents to increase when they’re not in the political arena.”
Bush’s Surging Popularity

Thomas Gift observed a remarkable shift in public opinion regarding former President George W. Bush, noting a significant turnaround since his time in office. “Today, his approval numbers are almost twice what they were when he served as commander-in-chief,” Gift stated.
Biden’s Memory in Spotlight

The appeal of Trump’s candidacy might be further bolstered by recent concerns surrounding President Biden’s memory. A report by Republican Hur claims Biden “willfully” retained and disclosed sensitive materials, including documents related to military and foreign policy in Afghanistan.
Photos Fuel Biden Debate

This report was supported by photos showing documents in a damaged box in Biden’s Delaware home garage. However, Biden firmly refuted the claim of willful retention as “misleading and just plain wrong.”
Juror Skepticism

One reason Hur cited for not pressing charges was skepticism over whether jurors would believe Biden knowingly kept the documents, citing his “significantly limited” memory, a contentious issue in this year’s election.
Memory Gaffes in Election Year

This concern was highlighted by Biden’s confusion over the year of his son Beau’s death and a recent mix-up between Mexico and Egypt when discussing the Israel-Gaza conflict, despite his assertion that his “memory is fine.”
