Abbott says Texans are not shooting migrants because Biden’s administration would “charge us with murder”

Texas Governor Greg Abbott explained that murdering migrants is the only tool the state is not using to fight migrants on the border because the Biden administration would sue.

While on “The Dana Loesch Show,” the Texas Governor said, “We are using every tool that can be used from building a border wall, to building these border barriers, to passing this law that I signed that led to another lawsuit by the Biden administration where I signed a law making it illegal for somebody to enter Texas from another country.”

“The only thing that we’re not doing is we’re not shooting people who come across the border because, of course, the Biden administration would charge us with murder,” the Governor concluded.

The statement went viral

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa issued a statement condemning Abbott’s interview, “The only thing stopping Greg Abbott from ordering law enforcement to shoot migrant women and children are murder charges. Time and time again, Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans have made it abundantly clear they have no morality or humanity.”

U.S. Representative Veronica Escobar, El Paso Democrat, replied on X, “I can’t believe I have to say ‘murdering people is unacceptable.’ @GregAbbott_TX. It’s language like yours that left 23 people dead and 22 others injured in El Paso.”

The razor wire along the Rio Grande prompted another major fight between The White House and Texas Governor. In December, the appeals court temporarily blocked the Biden administration’s attempts to destroy the wire barrier, except in cases of emergency. In late January, the Supreme Court ordered Texas to remove some of the razor wire.

Speaking to Dana Loesch, Governor Abbott said, “In the history of America, have you ever seen a president try to prevent a state from securing his own safety? We laid down this razor wire, hundreds of miles of it, that was an effective deterrent and repelled migrants from entering the state of Texas.”

Abbott continued, “Because it was so effective, Biden ordered the Border Patrol to either cut it or to lift it.” Yet, the dispute with Texas and the White House continued after Abbott signed a law allowing state law enforcement officers to arrest, detain, and deport suspected migrants.

The DOJ filed a lawsuit

The Department of Justice filed a lawsuit weeks after Abbott signed the law. It will become effective on March 5 and allow every Texas law enforcement officer to arrest those suspected of entering the U.S. illegally. Abbott also faced backlash for sending busses with migrants to Democrat-led cities, some alleged in the middle of the night or without any notice.

The Texas Governor wrote on X, “The Biden Admin. not only refuses to enforce current U.S. immigration laws, they now want to stop Texas from enforcing laws against illegal immigration.”

Abbott continued, “I’ve never seen such hostility to the rule of law in America. Biden is destroying America. Texas is trying to save it.”

Tensions on the rise

CBS News reported on January 10 that state officials “abruptly blocked federal U.S. Border Patrol agents from entering and patrolling a public area in the border town of Eagle Pass.” The DOJ reacted, “Texas’s new actions demonstrate an escalation of the State’s measures to block Border Patrol’s ability to patrol or even to surveil the border and be in a position to respond to emergencies.” The state policy made headlines when three migrants, two of them children, drowned attempting to cross the border in an area that federal agents were prevented from accessing.
