Giuliani made the claim on Wednesday in a meeting with his creditors and officials from the office of the US Trustee.
Paying part

Giuliani said that he thought he would be paid for extensive legal work conducted for the Trump Campaign and the Republican National Committee. “I got paid expenses,” he said, “but I never got a salary.”
Not even everything

“When we submitted the invoice for payment,” Giuliani elaborated, “they just paid the expenses. Not all, but most. They never paid the legal fees.”
Money problems

In December, Giuliani was ordered to pay $148 M to two Georgia election workers he defamed. The next day he filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Specific target

In filings related to the bankruptcy, Giuliani listed $10.6 million in assets and over $150 million in liabilities. Most of Giuliani’s wealth was in property, including a condo in Manhattan and a home in Palm Beach, Florida.
Pocket change

In his bankruptcy filing, Giuliani claimed to have just $351 in his savings account. From 2021 to the end of 2023, however, court papers show he took in over $3 million in retirement benefits.
The real targets

Giuliani specified that his million-dollar claims were against the Trump Campaign and the RNC, not Trump himself. However, Giuliani listed a potential claim against Trump for unpaid legal fees among his assets. The amount of the claim wasn’t specified.
Convoluted situation

“Trump will have to pay Rudy’s creditors,” former federal prosecutor Ron Filipkowski wrote, “since his unpaid legal fees to Rudy are one of Rudy’s assets in his bankruptcy.” The situation “just keeps getting better,” Filipkowski wrote.
Big money

According to the New York Times, Giuliani originally asked Trump to pay him $20,000 daily for the work. However, Bob Woodward and Robert Costa reported in their book, Peril, that Trump was unhappy with having to rely on Giuliani, whom he called “crazy.”
Last resort

“None of the sane lawyers can represent me,” Trump reportedly complained, “because they’ve been pressured.” Though Trump said that Giuliani “says crazy shit,” he was apparently the only option left for the former president.
Drying up

After the Jan 6 riot, Giuliani’s license to practice law was suspended. He was forced to leave a career that paid him several million dollars per year.
The work in question

The legal work Giuliani was unpaid for was his efforts to help Trump challenge and overturn the results of the 2020 election. Giuliani is one of Trump’s co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case.
Shadow on the horizon

Giuliani is also facing a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems, which he baselessly accused of helping rig the election. The company is seeking $1.3 billion in damages.
Yet more cases

In September, Hunter Biden sued Giuliani and a friend of the former mayor. Biden alleged that the pair spent years “hacking into, tampering with, manipulating, copying, disseminating, and generally obsessing over data that they were given that was taken or stolen from” Biden’s laptop and other electronic devices.
Back and forth

Giuliani also listed a potential “Joseph Biden defamation claim” as one of his assets in his bankruptcy filings. This claim did not have a specific value listed.
Raising funds

Giuliani’s legal battles are being funded in part by two defense funds. One, run by his son, raised $700,000 at a fundraiser hosted by Trump. The other collects small-dollar donations.
Keeping the peace

After the meeting, Giuliani said that US Trustee attorney Andrea Schwartz “asked all the right questions and I gave her all the information that I have. I have nothing to hide.”
