Former President Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law suggests that GOP voters would endorse the Republican National Committee (RNC) covering the former president’s legal expenses.
Unfamiliarity with Guidelines
On Wednesday, while campaigning for the former president before the South Carolina primary, Lara Trump admitted unfamiliarity with the organization’s guidelines for handling Donald Trump’s legal costs in numerous criminal and civil matters.
GOP Voters Approval
However, Lara, appointed by the former president to aid in steering the RNC, expressed her belief that the concept would receive widespread approval from GOP voters, who view his legal challenges as a form of political persecution.
People Are Furious
She said, “That’s why people are furious right now. And they see the attacks against him. They feel like it’s an attack not just on Donald Trump but on this country. So yeah I think that is a big interest to people, absolutely.”
“Ultra-MAGA Extremis”
In response to Lara Trump’s remarks, Alex Floyd, a spokesperson for the Democratic National Committee, labeled her as “a self-described ‘ultra-MAGA’ extremist who has been endorsed by her father-in-law to transform the RNC into a shell for Donald Trump and his legal bills.”
Legal Debts
Trump’s legal debts have surged past half a billion dollars, alongside the millions allocated for legal representation.
Civil Fraud Case
Earlier this month, Trump faced a setback when he was deemed liable for nearly $355 million in penalties in a civil fraud case in New York, dealing a significant blow to his family business.
Defamation Case
Last month, he was ordered to pay $83 million for defaming E. Jean Carroll after denying her sexual assault allegations.
No Nomination Yet
Despite leading the GOP presidential primary, Trump has yet to secure the Republican nomination.
New RNC Leadership
Nevertheless, he recently advocated for removing the RNC’s current leadership, endorsing Lara Trump as co-chair and proposing Michael Whatley, the current North Carolina GOP chair.
Transition Team Member
Whatley, currently the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party and the general counsel for the RNC, has prior experience with the Trump-Pence campaign and transition team.
Role in Trump’s Campaigns
Lara Trump, married to the former president’s son, Eric Trump, actively participated in her father-in-law’s 2016 and 2020 presidential campaigns.
Trust Increased
Laura conveyed to reporters on Wednesday that GOP voters would have increased trust in the RNC if a member of the Trump family assumed a leadership position.
Trump Loyalty Assured
She said, “Having someone like me in there, I think, will go a long way for people. I can assure you that my loyalty is to my father-in-law and I will make sure that every penny is used properly.”
November 5 Fight
Laura added, “It should be going to fight for November 5 for the causes that we care about.”
Changes After Spring
The current RNC Chair, Ronna McDaniel, stated that no changes would occur until after South Carolina’s primary on Saturday, with the RNC not anticipating formalizing any alterations until its spring meeting.
Strategy Outlined
Lara Trump outlines the strategic goals of electing Trump, bolstering the House with aligned candidates, and reclaiming the Senate.
Dissatisfaction over Performance
While Trump personally selected McDaniel to helm the party’s political apparatus, the former president became increasingly dissatisfied with her performance due to concerns over election losses and party finances.
Lack of Focus
Trump was also displeased with the party’s lack of focus on voter fraud, which he blames for his 2020 election loss.
DOJ Findings
This sentiment persisted despite his own Justice Department affirming the absence of widespread fraud and his team losing over 50 lawsuits related to the election.
Robust Campaign Strategy
Addressing Trump’s supporters and volunteers, Lara Trump articulated her vision, encompassing a robust campaign strategy to secure Trump’s election.
GOP’s Direction
The proposed leadership change also prompts inquiries into how Trump’s increased influence would shape the party’s direction.
Trump Endorsed Loyalists
Trump is already active in down-ballot Republican primary races for the House, Senate, and other offices, often endorsing opponents of Republicans he deems disloyal.
