First Day of my New Job

I just made a huge career change

Today was the first day of my new job. It is strange being at a new company after being at my last job for so long. There is a lot to learn and to do, but I’m up to the challenge. Here is a brief summary of my recent career change.

Everything to Nothing

I was at my last just shy of 20 years. As you can imagine, I had tons of knowledge about the organization. Today I walked into a world where I knew nearly nothing. To say it was a shock to the system is an understatement.

The learning curve that I’m facing is steep, but I am hoping that I start to catch on to things over the next few weeks as I have more exposure to them. I have to learn all new parts and processes, then I will be tasked with making improvements to them.

Some of what I am doing is familiar to me, as I am still working in a warehouse. There are trucks delivering and recovering items. There are parts that are being made into finished products. However, that is about all that is the same.

Looking Ahead

The company that I’m working for is attempting to move away from a start up and scale. They were attracted to my experiences at my former job, as that company went through a similar change.

Right now, I’m just taking it all in, but once I’m up to speed I will need to start laying out some high-level objectives to improve efficiency, flow, and costs. These types of changes don’t happen overnight, but I’d imagine that my superiors want to see then as soon as possible.

Conclusion

Today was the first day of my new job. I was at my former employer for almost 20 years. Thinking about that now, I was probably there for too long. None the less, it is a big change, and I’m still getting comfortable with it. Hopefully, I’ll settle in before long.
