Eric Schwerin, Hunter Biden’s associate and a former bookkeeper for the Biden family, testified before the House Oversight Committee that he was “not aware of any financial transactions or compensation” made by then Vice President Biden.
Behind closed doors
Congressional impeachment investigators received yet another blow in the Biden investigation. Eric Schwerin, who worked with Hunter Biden and was a financial adviser to Joe Biden from 2009 to 2017, testified behind closed doors that the President, then VP, had any role in his son’s businesses.
Opening statement
Several prominent outlets reported Schwerin’s opening statement. Schwerin told the Committee, “I am not aware of any financial transactions or compensation that Vice President Biden received related to business conducted by any of his family members or their associates nor any involvement by him in their businesses. None.”
The witness doubled down
Schwerin, who did taxes for the President, added, “In fact, I am not aware of any role that Vice President Biden, as a public official or a private citizen, had in any of Hunter’s business activities. None.”
The statement continued
Biden’s associate, who “managed almost every aspect of (Hunter Biden’s) financial life,” according to Kathleen Buhle, Hunter Biden’s ex-wife, further shared, “I cannot recall any requests for Vice President Biden to take any official action on behalf of any of Hunter’s clients or his business deals, foreign or domestic.”
Schwerin called out Republicans
In his testimony, Schwerin called out the allegations against the President as “preposterous.” In fact, he added, “In my discussions with the Vice President concerning his personal finances, he was always crystal clear that he wanted to take the most transparent and ethical approach consistent with both the spirit and the letter of the law.”
The witness described his relationship with Biden
Schwerin told the Committee, “I performed a number of administrative and bookkeeping tasks for then-Vice President Joe Biden related to his household finances. I also helped him and his accountants in their preparation of his taxes and his annual financial disclosure statements.”
The second interview
Schwerin was initially interviewed in March last year. He also specified that the President never participated in anything related to Ukraine to help Hunter’s work.
Raskin issued a statement
Jamie Raskin, the Committee’s ranking member, said in a statement, “House Republicans are about to begin the 14th month of this Trump-demanded fishing expedition.” Raskin, a Maryland Democrat, continued, “They have uncovered a mountain of evidence discrediting their own allegations, and they have failed to uncover any evidence of wrongdoing by President Biden whatsoever, much less an impeachable offense.”
“Vengeance”
Raskin, a constitutional law professor, argued, “Republicans have devoted more than a year to circulating lies and conspiracy theories in service of Donald Trump’s demands for political retribution and vengeance.”
Two main issues
The Washington Post’s Philip Bump noted, “House Republicans have done a good job detailing the scope and timing of deals. They have done a remarkably poor job tying them to the President.”
Devon Archer’s testimony
Bump reminded of Devon Archer’s testimony and cautioned that the GOP is highly selective in their reporting. He included some examples, which we are only aware of because the transcripts were made public.
The lack of transparency
The Washington Post reporter also wondered about the “lack of transcripts provided by Republicans.” Yet, “The FBI is fastidious about transcripts, one of which was provided to House investigators: a December 2020 interview with Hunter Biden’s former associate Rob Walker.”
Walker’s testimony
Like Archer and Schwerin, Walker responded to a question regarding an email alleging that the then-VP was involved in some deals: “I certainly never was thinking at any time that, ah … the V. P. was a part of anything we were doin’.” Read the Washington Post’s report here.
